Soooo, I forgot to grab a link book when I popped into my last age. I was exploring ages trying to get more options in my notebook so it is an unwritten age. The surface causes me weakness, slowness and hunger, I can't stay up there for long. Which is fine. I figured gather the resources to make a new description book and start age hopping and hope for a star nexus. Problem is this world is a checkerboard of desert and frozen river. No cows. No leather. No books.

I do have some access to my main base via a pair of ender pouches. One for my input chest, the other for my "tools" chest. Which is fortunate since I have automatic bread making tied into my wheat farm, so no food problems. And yeah, I did think "I should put a spare link book in my tools chest" just before this little adventure.

Anyway, I tried making a nether portal. I can ignite the obsidian but the portal doesn't open up. So I tried making a Twilight Forest portal but it, too, will not open up in this age, at least not under the surface.

Any other options for a legit way to get back to my age? Does a Twilight Forest portal need to be on the surface to work?

A TF portal will be struck by a lightning bolt when you drop the diamond in. I assume it needs a clear line of sight to the sky.

You know I'm going to tell you that normally I'm against cheating, and using a short cut to get past a mistake I've made. However, with Mystcraft if I goof up or something stupid happens in an age I just use the TPX command. If random worlds were less unstable I'd feel bad using the cheat, but when I go to fifteen worlds the first time it happens and I find no nexus and every single one of them has some kind of nearly fatal or nausea educing state I'd play legit. That said it does not and so I just warp home using the command.

Oh, I'm keeping the tpx command in mind, but would rather go legit if I can. I just want to make sure I exhaust all my options before cheating out. It has actually been rather fun adventure so far.

At first, no. But I did rectify that problem and it still didn't work. I haven't tried it on the surface yet which is my next move. If SeniLiX is correct about the lightning then that is probably the problem.

Well, next question would be do you have any access to Scrap or the ability to make and power Recyclers? You could try for Leather from Scrapboxes.

'To make a portal to the Twilight Forest, make a 2 x 2 shallow pool (4 squares) of water in a grassy area, and surround it entirely with natural stuff. Flowers, mushrooms or tall grass. Then throw a diamond in (with the "Q" key, by default) and stand back!'

So grass borders around it with flowers ( being the easiest to get ), 1 deep 2x2 pool. Possibly a clear line of sight to the sky.

Any news on your situation?

Twilight forest portals need to be on the surface, in a grassy area, with at least some sky access to open. It might be possible to open it by busting a hole to the surface above it, getting grass to grow down to the area the portal is in. Also, I've only manage to open portals surrounded by red flowers.

Another option is to create an age with a star fissure. You can either creative in a notebook (the current recommended way to get symbols), or trial and error it. Then just hop in the star fissure, and you're home.

this is incorrect my portal is underground i was able to open it fine the lightning went through the blocks above

It is my understanding that portals cannot be opened in Mystcraft ages legit. If it isn't a Mystcraft portal anyway.

Twilight Forest could in 1.4.2. I cannot vouch for anything more recent, but i haven't seen a changelog stating otherwise.

Welp, made it topside and that didn't make any difference. Flowers all around, grass around and in the pool, no lightning bolt, no portal. So I decided to go with Celestialphoenix' suggestion as it seemed like the closest to legit, in spirit, as I could get. 'cept it dropped me off at my base portal. So spawned item 90, stepped in, nether, stepped in again, home sweet home. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Kinda disappointed I couldn't make it back any other way.

I remember reading in the twilight forest changelogs that the portals have been disabled for mystcraft ages. (technically anything other than the overworld.)

It's too bad you weren't on multiplayer, or you could have someone pop in and rescue you. I once had to ask a friend to come and bring me a link book, as i had forgotten mine in the chest marked "DO NOT FORGET YOUR LINKING BOOK".

In regards to your situation, however, you can also try age-hopping until you get something with star fissures. They're rare, but you find them easily if you're in an age that has them; they look like vanilla chasms, but a lot messier, and they go a lot deeper.

He already stated earlier in the thread that Nether Portals don't work, Twilight Forest portals don't work, and the primary problem preventing him from escaping was a complete lack of cows and leather to make books with. I can't think of any nice way of saying "Don't people bother to read the thread?"
