I haven't played FTB in a long time, and I was wondering if I could get some tips on how to start out. Please and thank you.

Well, the first step is to get a pack. I don't have a preference, so I can't recommend one. However, once you have one selected, choose a mod to start with and go from there. We have some guides over at the official wiki that will help walk you through some of the mods to help get you started.

Agrarian Skies may be the pack for you. It has a built-in quest system that gives specific instructions on how each task is accomplished. You'll be introduced to the mods in a structured, step-by-step way that is easy to pick up.

The only downside is that it's a not a casual pack. If you die enough times, the world is deleted and you have to start over. Live and learn?

Horrid idea, they will play AS and move on to another pack and wonder "where's the sieve gone?", also it's a skyblock.

However the quest mod sort of helps teach you the mods despite the tweaks to the mods.

It's like suggesting "knives" when someone asks "I want to learn juggling, what's a good item to start with".

Well... Hmph. I hadn't considered the massive recipe changes made by Ex Nihilo and Ex Aquilo.

My bad. Carry on.
It's actually MineTweaker that changes the recipes IIRC. But the point stands, AS is a challenge map/ pack telling novices to play it to learn is kind of counter productive.

But then again, if the player manages to survive and learn they will find that they will be exceptional at the other packs. Like when you play Blood N Bones for a day then go back to Monster you realize you're a god.

You may wish to watch Direwolf20 and play his pack to get a feel for the mods and how they work. His series is pretty instructive, and he even shares world downloads every ten episodes.

Of course, there are other Lite packs that are specifically for newer players so you don't get so overwhelmed. That might also be a good place to start.
