Yeah and NJM said "that can help a lot", only 2 of those are actually helpful.

and ftb-wiki.com has been abandoned for ages.

I should also add that many individual mods have there own wikis, forum threads and websights. All of which can have useful information. And more and more mods are starting to include in game documentation.
But the FTB wiki's a good starting point.

A lot of mod wikis for older mods are very outdated. They tend to give you the idea of an item or block, but not up to date information. This is usually because devs spend their time coding, and rely on the community to put together the wiki.

While not currently part of FTB modpacks, ICBM and Mekanism are cool futuristic type stuff. The antimatter/redmatter warheads from ICBM are quite impressive (and world decimating). Mekanism has this sweet digital miner that lets you specify exactly what you want to pull out of the ground using filters and not touch any of the other terrain/ores.

Others have already mentioned modular powersuits, the stargate mod, and modular force fields so I will just second those. I believe there is also a mod that adds in the bugs from starship troopers and the guns from borderlands if that's your thing but they arent as refined IMO.
