To get the best output from mining, I made a list of what to do with everything. Figured it would be useful for others, so I'm posting here.

Obviously, anything that Fortune III works on must be Silk Touched to get any other effect. The multiplier used for fortune is an approximation over time. Any one block may give you only one, or several times more than the listed multiplier.

Tiny dusts can be converted to normal dusts 4:1
Normal dusts can (generally) be smelted to ingots 1:1

I tried to put things in order of preference, best to worst, but specific circumstance and need can change things up. (Note however, how much the macerator sucks) In fact, if you play with GregTech then GT will add recipes to the TE Pulverizer to make any recipe where the Pulverizer is slightly behind equal to the Macerator, while leaving the recipes with the bonus dusts. This means there is absolutely no reason to ever make a Macerator.

This list is generated from the MindCrack pack, what I currently play. This means GregTech is enabled. In games where GregTech is not available not only must you ignore the entry from the Grinder, but the pulverizer recipes will very rarely be worse than the macerator.

Gold Ore: (Updated for MindCrack 8.01)
Indus. Grinder: 2x Gold Dust + Tiny Copper Dust + Tiny Nickel Dust
Indus. Grinder + Sodium Persulfate Cell: 2x Dust Dust + Copper Dust + Tiny Nickel Dust
Indus. Grinder + Mercury Cell: 3x Gold Dust + Tiny Copper Dust + Tiny Nickel Dust
Factorization: 1.2x-3x
Induction Smelter: 2x Gold Ingot + (10% Chance) Rich Slag
Macerator: 2x Gold Dust
Pulverizer: 2x Gold Dust

Iron Ore: (Updated for MindCrack 8.01)
Indus. Blast Furnace: 3x Refined Iron
Indus. Grinder: 2x Iron Dust + Tiny Tin Dust + Tiny Nickel Dust
Factorization: 1.2x-3x
Induction Smelter: 2x Ingot + (5% Chance) Rich Slag
Pulverizer: 2x Iron Dust + (10% Chance) Ferrous Dust
Macerator: 2x Iron Dust

Coal Ore: (Updated for MindCrack 8.01)
Fortune III Pick: 2.5x - 2.8x Coal + XP
Indus. Grinder: 1x Coal + 1x Hydrated Coal Dust + 2x Tiny Coal Dust
Macerator: 2x Coal Dust
Pulverizer: 2x Coal Dust
Factorization: 1x

Lapis Lazuli Ore: (Updated for MindCrack 8.01)
Fortune III Pick: 12x - 13x Lapis Lazuli + XP
Indus. Grinder: 12x Lapis + 3x Lazurite Dust

Factorization: 1x

Diamond Ore: (Updated for MindCrack 8.01)
Indus. Grinder: 1x Diamond, 1.5x Diamond Dust, 1xHydrated Coal Dust
Fortune III Pick: 2.2x - 2.5x Diamond + XP
Macerator: 2x Diamond Dust
Pulverizer: 2x Diamond Dust
(4x Diamond Dust can be turned into 3x Diamond)
Factorization: 1x Diamond
(Some argument can be had for what to do here, I find Diamond dust incredibly useful, and Diamond gems are easy to get due to Coal -> Diamond conversion. In short though, diamond dust is useful and don't waste some by automatically converting all of it to gems)

Redstone Ore: (Updated for MindCrack 8.01)
Indus. Grinder: 10x Redstone + 2x Tiny Glowstone Dust
Macerator: 10x Redstone
Pulverizer: 10x Redstone

(Emerald Dust has some small use: Berylium, Data Storage Circuit)

Cinnabar Ore (Thaumcraft): (Verified for MindCrack 8.01)
Dark brown ore in the Overworld
Smelt for 1x Quicksilver
(Quicksilver can be turned into a Mercury Cell for the Industrial Grinder, but I'd suggest holding off. No idea what ThaumCraft will use for Quicksilver)

Ruby Ore, Sapphire Ore, Green Sapphire Ore: (Updated for MindCrack 8.01)
Indus. Grinder: 1x <gem>, 1.5x <gem> Dust, 2x Tiny <bonus> Dust
Ruby: Bonus = Red Garnet
Sapphire: Bonus = Green Sapphire
Green Sapphire: Bonus = Sapphire
Fortune III Pick: 2.2x - 2.5x <gem> + XP
Pulverizer: 2x <gem> Dust + (10% Chance) <bonus> Dust
Macerator: 2x <gem> Dust
(Ruby Dust is incredibly useful as the primary source of Chrome)

XXX Xychorium: (Verified for MindCrack 8.01)
Pickaxe: 3.1x - 3.5x
Fortune III has no effect

Aluminum [sic] Ore: (Verified for MindCrack 8.01)
Smelt for 1x Aluminum

Pulverizer: 2x Uranium Dust + (10% Chance) Plutonium Dust
Macerator: 2x Uranium Dust
Dust can be Compressed to Refined Uranium 1:1
Pick: 1x Uranium + XP
Compressor: 1x Refined Uranium

Monazit Ore [From MFFS]: (Updated for MindCrack 8.01)
Industrial Grinder: 10x Forcium + Thorium Dust

Macerator: 3x Cinnabar Dust
Unenchanted Pick: 2x Cinnabar Dust + XP

Sphalerite Ore [From GregTech] (Nether): (Updated for MindCrack 8.01)
Fortune III Pick: 4.1x - 4.5x Sphalerite Dust + (Small chance) Yellow Garnet + XP
Indust. Grinder + Sodium Persulfate: 5x Spahlerite Dust + 3x Zinc Dust + 1x Tiny Yellow Garnet Dust
Indust. Grinder: 5x Spahlerite Dust + 1x Zinc Dust + 1x Tiny Yellow Garnet Dust
Pulverizer: 4x Sphalerite Dust + (10% Chance) Zinc Dust
Macerator: 4x Sphalerite Dust
Unenchanted Pick: 2x Spahlerite Dust + 0.3x Zinc Dust
Unknown (0.3x or less) chance at a Yellow Garnet - Unaffected by Fortune
Sphalerite Dust is nearly useless, it reduces to sulfur and zinc, both of which are plentiful
Yellow Garnet has a single use: 112 Dusts will reduce to 2 Chrome
It takes 448 Sphalerite ores in the Grinder to get 112 Yellow garnet.
Similar amount if you mine it with the pick.
So while the grinder might be numerically superior on the dusts, you may as well mine it and get the XP.

Tungstate Ore [From GregTech] (The End): (Updated for MindCrack 8.01)
Indus. Grinder: 2x Tungstate Dust + 3x Tiny Iron Dust + 3x Tiny Manganese Dust

Pulverizer: 2x Platinum Dust + (10% Chance) Iridum Ore
Induction Smelter: 2x Platinum Ingot + (5% Chance) Rich Slag
Macerator: 2x Platinum Dust
Smelt: 1x Platinum Ingot

Olivine Ore [From GregTech] (The End): (Updated for MindCrack 8.01)
Indus. Grinder: 1x Olivine Gem + 1.5 Olivine Dust + 2x Tiny Emerald Dust
Pulverizer: 2x Olivine Dust + (10% Chance) Emerald Dust
Fortune III Pick: 2.7x - 2.9x Olivine Gem (no XP)
Macerator: 2x Olivine Dust
Unenchanted Pick: 1x Olivine Gem
(Olivine is so worthless, that extra Emerald from the Grinder/Pulverizer makes it better than Fortune)

Sodalite Ore [From GregTech] (The End): (Updated for MindCrack 8.01)
Indus. Grinder: 12x Sodalite Dust + 3x Aluminium Dust
Fortune III Pick: 12x - 13x Sodalite Dust + 1x Aluminium Dust

Unenchanted Pick: 6x Sodalite Dust + 0.3x Aluminium Dust

-- Edit Jan 21, 2013: Updated Nikolite for game change (added Diamond dust bonus) and expanded on gems and Sphalerite.

-- Edit Feb 2, 2013: Updated for MindCrack 8.0, which means Pulverizer bonus was increased almost across the board, and Induction Smelter bonus was reduced for Rich Slag due to a balancing change by King Lemming.

Each step has a given chance of getting an extra result. Multiply the steps together and you get just barely under 300% yield. That looks the world to me like it's possible to have an ore double during the grinding, then during the smelting, then again during the crystallization resulting in a potential 8x yield, but since this is spread out across multiple chances, it lowers the standard deviation and makes outliers less common. The end results are certainly not consistent when you watch each step of the process.

This is fascinating, my only problem is just like dating You got to do a lot of work to ket the special one. Hardly seems worth it.

But but but there's a "secret" in there :D

*lets the secret out*

Pulverizer: 2x Ferrous Dust + (5% Chance) Shiny Dust [Same as Platinum]

That Shiny dust (8 of) in an Industrial Centrifuge turns into Iridium Ore

Factorization grinder works with silk touch ores, you get on average 2,25 diamond or 8 redstone from ore, it even has silk touch tool. In FZ processing you are doubling most of the ores (excepts silver one) before washing, just grinding and slag furnace for it is enough.

I have to add, though, that your information on Factorization's diamond and coal yields isn't quite accurate...

In addition to Zjarek_S's note on diamond and redstone, you can also use the factorization grinder on coal ore to get 3.5 coal.

The situation with factorization and silver ore is quite strange, too, as you get more lead than silver out of it.

Bumping as I've updated for MindCrack 8.01. This required splitting the list into two messages.

The pulverizer and macerator produce iron, not gold ;-)

I hate to sound like a broken record, but your information for factorization yields is still incorrect.

Native Clusters are only gotten through mining with a Pickaxe of the Core or an Arcane Bore with the Pickaxe of the Core instead of a normal Pickaxe, so i don't think they're common enough to warrant their own entry... People that will be getting massive amounts of Native Clusters would be planning on doing stuff with Infernal Furnaces anyway. This list on the other hand works for about any method of mining, except for redstone/diamond ore which requires silk touch.

EDIT: Also, the Macerator is great for processing insane amounts of ore, such as those gathered from multiple running quarries, or quarries running on Dense Ore ages, so it's still something to keep in mind... 10 overclocker upgrades + 2 energy storage upgrades + 2 transformer upgrades makes it able to perform on par with the Rotary Macerator.

The rotary macerator has upgrade slots, though, so it is less logical to not go with it. The induction furnace, though, does not have any upgrade slots so it is pretty worthless as such.

I play with Direwolf20 pack, though, so i don't have access to the rotary macerator, since the only advanced machine in there is the induction furnace, at least for now. But yes, you're completely correct. If you have access to the rotary macerator and need to process insane amounts of ore, it's always better to go with it rather than the plain ol macerator. Only problem is that you need to constantly be feeding stuff for it to process, otherwise you're just wasting energy keeping it at 100%...
