Was ethanol nerfed?

I noticed it's very difficult to keep a steam boiler running on ethanol. Treats it like sticks to a furnace. Any idea who or what mod changed this?

we need some more information, like what modpack are you playing, which version, have you added any additional mods, have you changed any configs?

Stoopid question, but is the boiler at max heat? Until it is, it will burn through the juice.

CovertJaguar did something to the fuel values in Forestry 2.3.0.4. I haven't tried it out myself, but here's the changelog quip:

"- Change: Cut fuel values in 1/4 to align with Railcraft, IndustrialCraft standards. (From CovertJaguar) Config values available."

So it's entirely possible that ethanol is worth now only a quarter as much as it was by default. If that irks you, you can probably switch it back in the config.

I'm guessing it's the fluid section of the railcraft cfg,

Sadly, I have no clue what to add to this section to change anything. It's blank by default. My only problem with this change is it's pretty much made sapping biofuel impossible. I'm testing a max size MFR farm with 4 harvesters and 4 fertilizers, tested up to 8 fermenters and even 4 maxed out refinery plus's and I still can't make enough fuel to maintain a single large high pressure boiler.

Charcoal on the other hand can handle up to 6 boilers from the same setup.[DOUBLEPOST=1382289056][/DOUBLEPOST]

It wouldn't be possible to get it even close. In FTB 1.1.4 this wasn't nearly the same problem. I had 2 medium sized MultiFarms and was still able to supply 2 boilers with more fuel than they needed.

So I guess Biofuel/Ethanol has become crap fuel, I guess only good for combustion engines now. Odd considering it's not really a cheap setup.

He made a PCC for a while too, but decided to stop. I suppose you're right, he just made it independent.
I read it in the change log for oct 11th which is after I looked at it. Skyboy has way more cred to be working on the mod. So we really should use his. On top of that the samrg change pcc and corupted some of the lang files. It really is best to sue the skyboy version as much as possible. However power converters he isnt going to fork so this is actually great that they work together. Anyways good to see its all coming along well.

It's probably not in common.conf, but rather in the gamemode files. If it doesn't show up there, try generating a new custom gamemode. It wouldn't be the first time in Forestry's history that the default gamemodes aren't stocked with all feature settings.

I'd look for it myself but unfortunately I don't have an instance with that Forestry version... aaaand I'm also stuck at work. :p

Check config/forestry/gamemodes/<mode>.conf

Here's the settings from config/forestry/gamemodes/EASY.conf, which is the default game mode:

Also note that NORMAL and HARD don't even have such a line in theirs and I have no idea what the default value is for the boiler and indeed, you may be using NORMAL or HARD mode. Verify that via common.conf:

common.conf:difficulty.gamemode=EASY

I've so far only setup a charcoal-fueled boiler and haven't yet setup an ethanol one. However, I plan to increase the above to 2.0 or 4.0 if - like you - I discover that Ethanol has been hit too hard with the nerf bat.

I agree that one full-sized tree farm should be able to power at least one(1) 36HP boiler with Ethanol.
