From humble beginnings punching trees and gathering mud, to the final push to build a 30 thousand diamond epic skycastle or a 200 thousand iron replica of the city of Midgar. Build and hoard to unlock new materials and better tools. The only limit is your imagination. Test yourself. Find out if you have what it takes to finish…

The Tier 10 Challenge

This challenge was inspired by Maul_Junior's Refugee to Regent Kingdom Building Challenge. My original intent was to make an addon/mod to that challenge, by cutting a few of the more specific requirements like "Players must wear a leather helmet before going underground", "Food may NOT be stored in the Storage Room", and "Refugee Refuges: Must have Work Room". I wanted to make a more generalized version of the challenge that didn't micromanage quite so much.

But eventually it became a completely different animal. I've cut all the flavor elements and specific building requirement. Now you build what you want and receive points based on how big it is and the rarity of the materials. When you have enough points, you advance to the next level.

The end result is a challenge full of epic building spirit, with delayed unlocking of materials, but where you get to decide what to build and how to go about it. This challenge is playable in vanilla Minecraft, but it really takes off in a modpack like FTB Unleashed or Direwolf20.

I'd love to hear what you guys think. Post your screenshots or embed a video of you playing the challenge and I'll include them in the main post.

Challenge Rules:
Tiers:
This challenge consists of 10 tiers
Tier 1: Dirt
Tier 2: Wood Planks
Tier 3: Stone
Tier 4: Iron
Tier 5: Redstone
Tier 6: Gold
Tier 7: Diamond
Tier 8: Obsidian
Tier 9: Glowstone
Tier 10: End Stone

Locked/Unlocked Items:
At the beginning of the challenge, the materials corresponding to all tiers are locked. Locked items may not be used, used in crafting, or placed in the world. They may be put in Storage.
  • Dirt - No Materials; Nothing is unlocked in this tier
  • Wood Planks - All types of Wood Planks from vanilla Minecraft or mods
  • Stone - Stone/Cobblestone/Sandstone and other stony materials added to the Overworld that can be mined with a vanilla Wooden Pickaxe
  • Iron - Iron/Copper/Tin and other metals added to the Overworld that can be mined with a vanilla Stone Pickaxe
  • Redstone - Redstone/Lapis/Nikolite/Amber and other dusts or crystals added to the Overworld that can be mined with a vanilla Iron Pickaxe
  • Gold - Gold/Silver/Lead and other metals added to the Overworld that can be mined with a vanilla Iron Pickaxe
  • Diamond - Diamond/Emerald/Ruby/Sapphire and other gems added to the Overworld that can be mined with a vanilla Iron Pickaxe
  • Obsidian - Obsidian
  • Glowstone - Glowstone/Nether Quartz/Blaze Rods/Netherrack/Nether Brick/Soul Sand/Wither Skeleton Skulls and other materials found exclusively in the Nether
  • End Stone - End Stone and other materials found exclusively in the End
Crafted items made from locked items are locked until all their components are unlocked.

Each tier, the materials corresponding to that tier will be unlocked. They remain unlocked for the rest of the game.

Items acquired through exploration (dungeon loot, rare mob drops, villager trades, etc) are treated as unlocked one tier early. This only applies to the specific copy of the item gained through exploration.

Example: Sally is fighting a zombie. She kills it and the zombie drops an iron shovel. Since Sally is in Tier 2: Wood, the shovel is still locked. She puts it away in a chest for later. When Sally reaches Tier 3: Stone, this iron shovel, which would be unlocked in the next stage, becomes unlocked. She may use it. However, she may not use any other iron shovels.

In Tier 10: End Stone, all items are unlocked, even if they would still otherwise be locked.

Mod Locking/Unlocking:
Some mods have clearly delineated levels for the generation, storage, transmission, or use of power, items, or liquids. Others have levels of materials for use as weapons, armor, tools, or chests. In those cases, all items and materials in all levels of each type are locked.

When a level 1 item/material of one type from a mod is craftable, all level 1 items/materials of that type from that mod are unlocked. Level 2 items/materials of that type will unlock in the next tier, and so on, until all items/materials of that type are unlocked.

Example: In Tier 3: Stone, glass is available. As a result Buildcraft's Cobblestone Transport Pipes can be crafted. Since they are level 1, all level 1 Buildcraft Item Transport items are unlocked. In the next tier, Tier 4: Iron, all level 2 Buildcraft Item Transport items (Stone Transport Pipes) will unlock. In the next tier, Tier 5: Redstone, all level 3 Buildcraft Item Transport items (Gold Transport Pipes) will unlock. Note that in this case, Gold Transport Pipes are still uncraftable because Gold is locked until Tier 6: Gold.

Points & Advancement:
Points are gained for Storage and Buildings. When you have enough points, you advance to the next tier of the challenge.

Your point total is determined by the current Buildings you have built and the current items you have in Storage. If a Building or item in Storage is destroyed, the points are deducted from your total.

The number of points needed to complete a tier is determined by the difficulty being played. It increases as the challenge progresses.

The point totals for each tier are not cumulative. After finishing Tier 1: Dirt, you keep all your points and will have half the points needed to complete Tier 2: Wood.

Buildings:
A Building is anything constructed by a Player from blocks. This can include things such as houses, farms, orchards, castles, etc.

Buildings score points based on the number of stacks (64) of blocks that make them up. Any kind of block can be counted for this, including decorative blocks like paintings and fences.

Buildings score more points based on the number of stacks (64) of special materials they contain. Rarer, more valuable materials are worth more points per stack. If a valuable material is a metal or a gem, the listed points are for stacks of the base item.

Example: 1 stack of Common Metals used in Building is made from 64 iron ingots. It could be 7.1 iron blocks, 170.7 iron bars, or 64 iron ingots in item frames. It could also be a mixture of these, made from 64 iron ingots.
Storage:
An item is in Storage when it resides in a Player Inventory, or a storage unit (such as a Chest). Liquids are in Storage when they reside in buckets/capsules in a Player Inventory or storage unit (such as a Chest), or in Tanks.

Stored stacks (64) of items or buckets of liquids score points for the player. Rarer, more valuable items are worth more points per stack/bucket. A crafted item composed of multiple different rarities, has its value based on the most valuable item it contains.

Due to ease of automation in later tiers, and to encourage diversity and building, there are diminishing returns on points for items in Storage.

Please note: You can only have a single score added to your current points for any one type of item or liquid.

Example: Billy has 4 stacks of cobblestone in a chest. This is worth 2 pts. If Billy stores 4 more stacks of cobblestone in another chest/barrel, he receives no more points. He is still receiving 2 pts because he still has more than 4 stacks, but fewer than 32 stacks. If he later stores 28 more stacks of cobblestone, he will have a total of 32, and his cobblestone points will increase from 2 to 4.

Item Values:
Items are broken down into 6 categories based on rarity.

Values.png

Note: Storage (Items) is included for clarity for players using an AE system. K, M, G, T, P, and E are kilo, mega, giga, tera, peta, and exa. They represent thousands, millions, billions, trillions, quadrillions, and quintillions respectively.

If an item is crafted, its value is the value of the most valuable component.

Example: A diamond block is made of diamonds. Its value is 32 pts (per stack). A piston is made of wood, cobblestone, iron, and redstone. Its value is 8 pts (per stack).

If a crafting recipe produces multiple items, divide the value of the recipe by the number of items produced (round down; minimum 1).

Example: 4 Oak Wood Planks are made of 1 Oak Wood. The recipe value is 1 (per stack). The value of one Oak Wood Plank is 1 / 4 = .25. Due to rounding it would be 0, but the minimum is 1.

I think you failed to do that :) lol. Awesome job with the writeup and all the thought put into this challenge. Gonna enjoy watching you, following you on Youtube now!

However, this looks like it could turn out to be pretty fun, I might do this bit by bit in my spare time as well, probably either Unhinged or Magic Farm on Hard Mode...could make for a fun series for my new stream :D

Sorry. Real life's taking me away for awhile. I'll definitely be back when FTB 1.6 drops. :D
