any way to lessen them, playing 1.6.4 direwolf20 my entire server hates it. is there a way to stop it

I think there are some mods out there that allow you to edit the spawnrate of mobs. I believe mo'creatures also has a mod like that...

That will not help, because zombie hordes are not the result of natural spawn mechanics.

Zombies simply have a chance to spawn an additional zombie when you're not directly looking at them. Every zombie spawned in this manner has its chance to spawn additional zombies reduced by a small value, so eventually (after a couple of "generations") the horde stops replicating itself. Unless, of course, you pick up a new naturally spawned zombie while running away, that one can spawn its own horde.

I think it's neat, actually. 1.6 was the first time I died to a zombie since, oh, sometime in 1.2. And I do play on Hard difficulty. Making zombies a credible threat was sorely needed, especially after other vanilla mobs got buffed as well (creepers in 1.4, skeletons in 1.5). And honestly, the horde mechanic is way more creative and interesting (and way more threatening) than simply doubling the damage output or HP of a creature that can never touch you in the first place because it is too obvious, too slow and doesn't have any trick up its sleeve.

Well now it does. How are your zombie apocalypse survival skills?

Man, those zombies in my game with Mekanism's weapons and suits if Lapis/Glowstone armor. I hid in my hovel of shame like the coward I am. :(

Add Zombie Awareness, makes things even worse/challenging. Especially when combined with Mekanism like PiereceSG mentions. Every morning I have to deal with 5-10 armoured zombies that survived sunrise, and if they are baby angry zombies - shudder.

there is a small chance for a zombie to spawn another zombie, but I believe the hordes still happen because several group of zombies gather together from a greater range, and you can change their spawnrates so less groups of zombies spawn. I've installed this mod myself http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1909304-164forge-mob-spawn-controls-2-back-better-than-ever/
as I've had it with the Hecate mobs from Ars Magica 2 and completely disabled their spawning with that mod, god what an unbalanced and annoying mob

Aheh. I just added Ars Magica to the server today. It's on highest difficulty... let's see if these Hecates are everything I keep hearing about them.

Of course, they'll be facing full advanced nano armor and a nanosaber that one-shots everything but endermen...

You'll be fine ;)

Hecates are nasty if you're not in full gear, as they are fairly hard to see in caves/twilight forest; but once armored, you're safe as a bug in a rug.

(for what it's worth, I love the zombie hordes. It adds another fun mechanic, as noted above, and gives real value to the scythe from TiCo....being able to cleave multiple mobs comes in VERY handy.)

Hecates are not that bad really. My server is on hard difficulty. Yes, they hit hard, and appear to ignore armour, but they have low health. 2 hits from an iron sword and they are dead. You just have to get your attacks in first. Plus, I believe AM2 adds magic resistance enchants, which reduces the damage Hecates cause.

Their worst thing is their invisibility ability, if you hear one and suddenly take some damage, just swing your weapon around like mad...
