Zombies spawning right next to players in FTB Monster?!

A couple of times now I've been out and about at night in the Overworld, beating up on a zombie or two, and had new zombies spawn RIGHT NEXT TO ME. Literally in striking distance.

I thought this was impossible; that Minecraft wouldn't spawn hostile mobs closer than ~20 blocks to the player. Anyway, it made things a little exciting. :) I really REALLY hope it's only zombies; the implications of having creepers spawn right on top of me are not pleasant to contemplate.
 
This is a vanilla mechanic. When fighting zombies, there is a chance that they will spawn more, most likely right behind you.
The "new" zombies can be normal zombies, or baby zombies, and if you have a mod that tweaks the mob difficulty, it will affect those zombies as well.
 
Aha! Thanks very much; I didn't know Minecraft had buffed zombie hordes to this extent. OTOH, hooray indeed now that there are fun uses for rotten flesh... :rolleyes:
 
Leather from redstone furnaces, zombie jerky with drying racks.. blocks of flesh for golems (or just decoration, you sick and twisted person you...)
