In the latest version, it even displays a yellow or red grid pattern, depending on whether the block receives daylight during the day or not. Very handy feature (along with the chunk grids)

also, dang. nei isn't allowed on my vanilla server, although i don't think it should be disallowed as the cheat won't work and... well... that's the only real reason i can think of that matches their rules.
i play ftb but i also am on the hatventures vanilla server so i was hoping to get that grid feature. it's a lot more useful than the what's my light level mod, tho i still like/use that one

You won't be banned for using NEI. And if they do ban it, it's their fault for not understanding what NEI is and how it limits you if you aren't opped.

You can use f3 to detect light levels in vanilla since it's a part of the game. It doesn't have a visual grid representation, but it's there.
