I've been trying my hand FTB and FTB-like modpacks, so far without much succes. I always feel so overwhelmed by all the stuff there is to do, of which I have little knowledge and looking it all up takes me so much out of the game.

I first tried Tekkit on a multiplayer server. It however had the OP EE enabled and everybody grew bored very quickly once the power flowers were constructed, by which time you'd be basically in Creative Mode.

Some time later I did Attack of the B-Team on a multiplayer server. Even though it's a stripped kind of modpack I still had no sense of direction. That server pretty soon moved on to the Crackpack, which my computer at the time couldn't run.

Now I have better hardware and I am in the middle of playing Regrowth. This is working out well so far for me; by restricting resources and introducing different aspects gradually through questing I don't have the feeling of getting thrown in at the deep end and I don't mind briefly stepping out of the game to look up a thing or two.

Once I have completed Regrowth I'd like to try my hand at FTB. But then I take a look at the FTB launcher itself and there's almost 40 versions of FTB right there. Then there's the ATlauncher which has the Crackpack and Resonant Rise 3 and God knows what else.

Long story short: how do I figure out what modpack to use?

Thank you for reading.

I think HQM (the questing mod you noticed in regrowth) is generally an excellent way to familiarize yourself with new mods. HQM was popularized (and introduced) with Agrarian Skies, so you may wish to check that out (Agrarian Skies is on the old FTB Launcher. I believe you can get Agrarian Skies 2 on the Curse launcher)

If you decide you get bored with HQM, I always recommend the Direwolf20 packs to new players since you can watch Direwolf20's youtube series' to follow along and learn things you may not already know.

Thanks for the advice. Funny you should mention Direwolf: I checked his LP of Regrowth and found it not that entertaining. How does DW20's modpack differ from the rest?

I don't find it super entertaining myself, but its a good selection of popular FTB mods.

Direwolf20 (the pack) is a kitchen-sink pack: it features popular mods without any specific theme or objective. Its named after the youtuber of the same name who does regular "seasonal" shows on them.

All in all, what sets it apart is more or less its level of "average"-ness: it runs solidly, its neither too big nor too small, it has no special quirks or surprises you need to be concerned about.

By contrast, I'm a fan of the Infitech2 pack which is a highly-specialized pack that appeals to a narrow niche of players. Its considerably harder to get into as a new player, features a ton of "grinding" and changes an awful lot of rules (recipes and such) from how they're typically offered. While I consider this fun for me I don't recommend it to newer players.

FTB Infinity Evolved (Expert mode) also falls into this category: it features a lot of popular mods but changes many rules and advancement paths considerably, to a degree that a lot of the resources you'd find online (wikis, videos, reddit and such) wouldn't be of much help. That's why packs like Direwolf20 are good for newer players: everything just "works."
