It's been heavily implied by the author that the recipe is really a 'dummy' - It will probably get a more sensible (if not cheaper) recipe once the research mechanics and whatnot are laid out. For now, it's something more like a 'debug' tool.
It's not as though intraworld linking is hard to 'fake' though... just set up a 'library', or a 'nexus' in another dimension. That is, set up a stable age (or even the nether!), and put linking books to interesting places in the overworld in a central location. Then, link to the nexus whenever you want, and then go back to the overworld with whichever book you please.
Really, I can think of only one situation where this process doesn't work very well, and that involves crystal portals.
