So I was thinking of getting into bees and well it seems to me now with the nerfed Apiarist Database that thing got a lot harder. Now my question is it reasonably viable to do bees without using third party programs to figure which bees to breed to get such and such bee?

I tried breeding a bit with bees and I got nearly nothing accomplished. I also saw in a video that there is like 2.5% chance of getting a certain bee from breeding 2 different types of bees so it seems legitly finding out that combination with no knowledge of what to breed it would be impossible. Things like that make me think it might be a uncanny task to legitly breed bees.

If you have been breeding bee legitly could you give me some tips?

PS: Legitly= No third party programs or websites and no master apiarist database.

I tried doing it legit and failed miserably... seems without prior knowledge or some kinda guide... it's pure luck.

For the standard forestry set, there is a common base set, and the mutations branch of from there. The next advancement is a combination of the previous. When you get into extra bees, this breaks down somewhat.

Honestly being someone who has looked at websites to find the combos. I have to say it would be almost impossible to get a few of the extra bees bees without cheating because they simply make no sense even with some of the vanilla bees you get some head scratchers.

Precisely what I was afraid of. Thaumcraft at least made lots of sense and with a bit of thinking you could figure out stuff but with bees...

I find that this would just kill all the fun I could potentially have with bee. On one hand if I can't get any bees legitly then I won't have fun and on the other hand if I use a website ill be cheating and thats not fun >.<

I had the idea to create a bee randomizer where I would set up all my known bees in static drone generators, and a bunch of "test" bees in another array, then randomly combine drones from the static part into the test bees. From there automatically filter out any unknown drone types for discovery, which then would reveal how to breed them more permanently. Sure, it would take a while, but given 24/7 server operation I could see it working.

You will need lots and lots of Common bees. Most of the hive bees will mutate from common to get the higher tier bee. You have a chance for cultivated along with the next tier of bee, so some luck is required, and not all of the mundane bees will mutate into the next tier, but it is a good start. For instance the marshy bee when crossed with a common has a chance to become a swamp bee as well as a cultivated bee. So it will likely take a few tries before you get the swamp and not cultivated. If you get really stuck, you can check out the new bee wiki. It does contain spoilers though.

Hmm I am thinking with mass breeding I could find a way but it would be more mid to late game oriented since you need huge amounts of apiaries. It would be cool to try. I would be thinking 50 apiaries with all same princess then a barrel full of a drone I want to breed feeding princess every cycle. Or something along the lines. I guess ill try to get a setup going legitly but I am not sure if I can make it all the way through bee tech tree without a spoiler

As someone who worked through the forestry side of things (way back when they were first implemented), those mutations are relatively easy to find. You will have a limited amount to breed at any given time, and some will make more sense than others.

Adding the Extra bees complicates things to the point that you either waste a lot of time or look some of them up. I tried doing it blind for a bit and got as far as the sweetened and ancient varieties before I couldn't go any further.

This is more complicated by the fact that the database doesn't seem to be craftable at this point (it's quite useful, and tells you what was bred to get what, which you can use to guess at the next lines).

It's also difficult when you don't know what's possible (again, given the mods and resources, you can make educated guesses, but no more than that).

The database that shows you what mutations you've already bred is certainly craftable, it's just NEI isn't showing the carpenter recipe.

The flora in a box is intended to be creative only. You're not supposed to know everything possible without "cheating"

Not only that, it seems to have disappeared from the extra bees, and forestry wikis. I just confirmed it is still working tho.

In a carpenter with water.

Code:
g p g
t e t
r d r

g = gold bar
p = glass pane
t = tin
e = emerald
r = redstone dust
d = diamond

Working as of DW20 V5.01

Credit to iceonnet on these forums for having brought it over from a wiki prior to disappearance (which is how I found it).

EDIT: Seems to still be on the FTB wiki

I tried the stated recipe in the carpenter (from the unofficial wiki), and no dice. This could be because I'm technically playing SMP (it's easier on my laptop if the world stuff is done elsewhere).

So is this suggesting that they plan to remove the Database altogether I mean thats really pushing it. From what I seen almost no one can do bee breeding without cheating at least a little bit so they definitely need to buff something no remove a very useful tool. I thought the Database nerf was uncalled for.
