So, I am trying to setup a maintenance free tree farm that produces charcoal with thaumcraft golems.

I have:
A Chopper Core Golem to chop the trees down.
A Gather Core Golem gathers the saplings and logs and places them in a chest.
A Use Core Golem takes saplings from the chest and replants the trees as necessary.
An Empty Core golem takes logs from the chest, and feeds them into an Infernal Furnace.
The infernal furnace feeds its output into a hungry chest.
As I am running AE from this, a 2nd Empty Core Golem takes charcoal from the Hungry chest and feeds it into a bank of Vibration chambers.

Now, I have two maintenance issues with this so far:
1. The AE system is consuming charcoal slower than it is being produced. When the vibration chambers are all full the hungry chest will start to fill. When that is full charcoal will start to spill out. This is not a huge problem as the system will keep on working.
2. The real problem is, saplings. Each tree chopped produces more saplings than are replanted. I want to divert the *excess* saplings to be reduced to herba (and arbor) to supply some lamps of growth, but I don't know how to set that up - with golems, such a supply of saplings is kept for the replanting golem to plant from. Also - If I don't get rid of the excess saplings then the gather golems chest will fill up preventing him fetching logs and charcoal production will halt.

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
A temporary solution would involve a vanilla hoppers sucking (as usual) saplings out of a dedicated sapling chest into a lower chest.
The lower chest contains saplings for the farm. The upper chest is fed with saplings from the farm.
When the lower chest is full, saplings remain in the hopper- and can be golem'd over to herba production.

You should be able to do something way cooler with AE level emitters, and pistons to divert the golems into different chests/control which golems are able to access the farm.

Not yet really used Golems, but what if you have a golem taking the saplings from the main chest, and fill two chests (I think they can do that), the first chest are the supplies for the farm, the 2nd overflow chest then for whatever you need.
Your main input chest then won't get backstuffed.
