This is my first time trying out Thaumcraft 4 and the Infusion Altar, so I'm probably doing something wrong.
I'm trying to create the Silverwood Wand Core. I have 7 pedestals around (plus 1 more for the center altar), plenty of heads on the ground nearby, each of the 6 shards in each of the pedestals, plus the Salis Mundus in the 7th pedestal. In the jars, I have about 9 of each of the required essentia - some of them have 10 or 11. In the center pedestal I have the silverwood log.

So I right click the rune at the top with my wand to start the process. It uses up the essentia it needs, leaving a little essentia in the ones that had 10 or 11. Then it starts eating the items. At this time, the instability kicks in and knocks an item or two off the pedestals - not a big deal, I quickly replace them.

However it seems like if it's missing one of the items when it's expecting it - e.g. one of the items it just knocked off, it will suddenly restart the whole process? As in, it will go back to drinking up the remaining essentia, and since there's not enough, it stalls and builds up massive amounts of instability/flux and never gets back to eating items unless I stop it (by removing the greatwood in the middle), refill all my essentia jars, and refill each of the pedestals. I've tried it three times already and it did the same thing all three times, and now I'm out of Salis Mundus so I more or less ragequit for the time being.

Is this a bug? Or am I missing something? Or is there a good trick for dealing with this?

It happens. Annoying, but normally you miss an item (even though it doesn't seem like it) which sends it into this process. Just slap some hoppers down on your pedestals and add a few extras in the hopper, it'll handle any that pop off, hopefully preventing this.

Wow, I didn't think of hoppers for the pedestals, that's a good idea. Thanks.
Now I just need to acquire some more salis mundus >_>
