So without Red Power or Logistics Pipes I am at a loss as to how I can set up a reliable sorting/processing system. I just made a nice and pimped out mining cart using Steve's Carts but am waiting to set him loose until I can deal with the influx of materials. Any suggestions?

Some ideas to start with:
  • Railcraft and Item Loaders/Unloaders going to Chests (prepare to dig for iron).
  • Buildcraft and Barrels (not recommended in SMP, your server admin will hate you if enough is actually going through the system).
  • Factorization Routers and Barrels (I've been plotting out the quirks of this setup and hope to have a "warehouse" setup I can show off tomorrow).
  • ComputerCraft Turtles (another option that may irritate a server admin and also has a high personal skill -- lua programming -- threshold).

Thanks for the ideas Vauthil! Railcraft might be fun to play around with, I just wish Buildcraft pipes weren't so derpy all the time.

Buildcraft pipes also work really well with hoppers and thermal expansion machines if you don't mind pipes everywhere. My system is an ugly power hungry monster but it does it's job for now.

if you've seen jaded's livestreams on twitch she's done a sorting system based on buildcraft pipes and barrels. if you are new to the mods, and don't want a big challenge yet, the BC pipes and barrels are a great solution.
but as mentioned, don't try it on a server or you'll have the chance of a banhamma following you.

Quick question then added on to this, and i'm new, so it may have been posted elsewhere, but will logistics pipes be making their way back into the FTW modpack?

yes it will. LP was made by krapht, who's been MIA for a bit, but now he's back and I believe he's working on a complete rewrite of LP.
in the meantime there were some people who ported LP to the latest MC versions and added their own ideas into LP, but that is an unofficial version.

FTB has chosen to use the official version of LP made by krapht, but sadly there's no ETA yet.

Well I guess since he is a helpful guy in general cpw will assist im. It might also be possible that Logistic-Pipes will be merged with Buildcraft, since Krapht maintains both (well the later with the help of Sengir, CovertJaguar and cpw and I guess Sengir does the mainwork? not sure about it they are all awesome :p).

So with some reworking and maybe some help from other programmers who bring a different perspektive with them logistic-pipes could bring some epicness back to buildcraft (either as addon or inclusion) and it will be a more or less required alternative for redpower, since not everyone likes the a bit more complex behavior of tubes.

So I'm looking forward to the new logistic-pipes and will most likely try them out when they are released. But not really sure if I move away from redpower, because I like how it works.

Reading that made my day, as i've wanted to do a huge auto sorting/macerating/smelting/compressing/extracting/crafting system, but it would be humungous and very power hungry using just pipes. LP will make is so much more compact and pretty :):):)

I hope krapht will not do that, IMHO LP deserves the spotlight as a mod of it's own, because it's just so damn epic.
and BC rolled out an update for 1.4.5 and I am watching matta's stream right now, and it looks like BC added some epicness back themselves ;)
