So I want to add two extra blocks of height to my reactor. It has four fuel rods, currently at about 20% capacity.

Can I just take the top off (including the control rods) add two extra layers of yellorium fuel rod to each, then put the lid back on, or will this cause explody trouble for me?

And will the structure just automatically recognise the two new empty layers of fuel rod on top of each and incorporate them, or is there something else I need to do?

Remove the entire top layer, control rod blocks too. Extend and top off your coolant. You'll lose your internal energy buffer but explosions aren't implemented just yet
