Ok I set up a sever for me and my mate to play on, its live I was on it (host) but when he goes to connect it says in the multiplayer screen 'cannot reach sever'

Is this something to do with my end or is something on his end blocking the connection?

a few things to check:

1. is he: (A) trying to connect to the server from his house or (B) connecting when he's at your house?
2. What Server address is he entering into the multiplayer screen?

if you gave him an address like 192.168.X.XXX, then that's wrong.
Google "My IP" that will give you the address you should be using. you should get something like: 131.102.38.143

it could also be that you ip address you gave him was correct, but that your ip has changed by the time he has gone to use it. (unlikely though)
if this does in fact turn out to be the case, i can help you setup a way around it.

nope didn't work, could it be that he has to forward the same ports that I have done for the sever?

no, only the Host has to port forward.

post this info so i can see where you may have gone wrong

your IP (as given by google, minus the last block (i.e. 83.124.64.XXX):
the Port you forwarded and the protocol used (TCP, UDP or both):
The IP YOU use to connect to the server: 127.0.0.1?
Wheather YOU can connect to the server using YOUR IP as given by google: yes/no

i cant see anything wrong with that.

there's one thing you can try.. you can disable your firewall and try again
THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED BUT IT WILL RULE OUT YOUR FIREWALL AS A CAUSE AND YOU SHOULD ENABLE IT AGAIN AS SOON AS YOUR DONE CHECKING
