Hey guys, I'm about to get a FTB server going and I need some pointers.

I have run servers in the past. I ran vanilla and tekkit for a long time and then FTB for a short while when it first released. I'm now in a position to run a server once again. There are a lot more FTB packs now though and I don't really know which to even use or what they are like. So I have a few questions before I dive in, but first please note that I want to run an open public server, no white-list. I also don't plan to have any bullshit donations system but a good permissions system for earned ranks would be good. Now...

What mod pack is recommended for a multiplayer server? On what version of Minecraft do they run?

Are any new modpacks on the horizon?

What plugins are available and recommended, and how are they installed?

Can anyone recommend some good affordable host for a 15-20 player-limit server?

Is there a good list of recommended config changes somewhere for running a safe public server?

These are all questions that are going to be up to you to answer yourself. No one here can recommend you a mod pack or plugins to install that haven't already been mentioned around the forums. If you are running a server, you are the one that needs to decide what you are going to enjoy running it with. We don't know your likes/dislikes or what you think is fun or not.

1. I would suggest taking a look at the modpack page on the ftb site, it lists all of the mods that are in each pack...this will be your best bet to start. Each pack runs on whatever version of MC it's mods are compatible with...the modpack page will tell you. http://feed-the-beast.com/mod-packs

2. There probably hundreds of private mod packs out there, and new official modpacks for ftb are probably going to be kept a little "hush hush" until they are very close to release.

3. As for recommended mods, check out the threads with people recommended additions to the modpacks, that would probably be the best place to start as well. http://forum.feed-the-beast.com/threads/suggest-mods-for-ftb-here.22818/

4. http://www.minecraftforum.net/forum/131-minecraft-server-hosting/

5. There's probably a few floating around, search is your friend here ;) Someone elses settings might not be your preferred settings, so I'd recommend doing your own. (Or maybe asking a more specific question...however, modded minecraft is pretty notorius for not being "safe" unless you disable most of the fun mods).

Like Staxed has said, this is only a matter of opinion, choose whatever you'd like.

1. I'd recommend FTB Unleashed for Minecraft 1.5.2 or FTB Ultimate 1.4.7 . They are the most popular modpacks and have lots of fun things to do in both of them.

2. The newest modpacks out now are Direwolf20 2.0, FTB Unleashed, and FTB Unhinged. All are different.

3. I'd recommend Grief Prevention, Essentials, Prism, Tekkit Customiser, PermissionsEX, and Worldedit. All of them are drag-drop but some require more configuration before running.

4. I use envioushost as they are cheap, reliable, and overall great when it comes to server hosting, check them out here.

5. Only thing I've been able to find was this griefprevention config here, but look around and you'll find something.
