hey guys,

i'm running a private server. max amount of people on it are 4. atm we have 600mb of ram (from clanforge), and i'm planning to move to creeperhost. the reason why is because i want more RAM. because i think this will solve the problem of the server restarting constantly because of not having enough ram. i'm running a private modpack with 50 mods in total.

the question is..
will 1GB will be enough for 4 players on this server?

i hope someone can help me out :)
thx in advance

Any of the main FTB packs would be better served with a 2GB machine. Also look at the core CPU speed. Sometimes VPS servers can't handle FTB. Mine is a dedicated KS1 server from OVH.com and it sometimes has problems running the DW20 pack.

VPS is a virtual server. Basically the physical server is hosting other servers. For example the host server could be a VMWARE host and it has running under it two minecraft servers, a web server, and a few others. To each of the server owners they look like a dedicated linux or windows server that performs it function. Where as a dedicated servers is the whole physical box dedicated to just one server and doesn't have any other jobs.

As for CPU, the main minecraft game loop runs as a single thread. On vanilla minecraft servers that usually isn't an issue because vanilla minecraft only has its own process to check. However, in modded minecraft (FTB) you need to have all of the mods do their checks in the main game loop as well. Each machine, entity you place from a mod adds time to the game loop. As long as the loop can finish on time (50ms) then there is no server lag. However, things from mods can quickly overwhelm that time and take longer then 50ms. Even with only 4 players I would suggest at least 3.0 GHz speed. This is something multiple cores can't help with either.

With minecraft servers there tends to be 3 different types out their with the many server hosts.

1.) Shared resource - With this server option your game server is hosted along with several other people's servers on the same computer. All of which are competing for the limited resources it provides.

2.) Virtual private server (VPS) - With this option your server exists in its own virtual computer environment with its own dedicated resources. Which exists along side a few other VPS's on the same computer, each with their own private resources.

3.) Dedicated server - With this option you have a totally dedicated computer to run your server and is currently the very expensive top tier option.

In my experience option one is the most common especially among the cheap server options that are out their, especially if they promise more hardware than is justified with the price. As for 2 it is personally the best option for most people as it is the best of both worlds and last time I checked all of creeperhost's server fall into this category. Now for option 3 that is only really viable for very large servers or people with very deep pockets but you do get what you pay for.

As long as your not planing on running any of the large 1.6.4 mod packs like monster that should be fine. Back when my own server was running ultimate that was more then enough for about 5 people. However ever since upgrading to monster I've had to upgrade the server all the way up to spider for the 3gb of ram. But even with that the server sits around 90% for ram usage always with the same 5 people.

As for http://omgserv.com it looks like they are European based and the site does not mention if their server infrastructure stretches to the US. Also it sounds like they are shared resource servers where everyone on your system is competing for the 256gb of ram they are claiming.
