Good morning!

I'm setting up a server. My choices are an i5 650 3.2GHz, or an i5 2400 3.1GHz. 8GB RAM on each (though the RAM speed could be different, I should check), and whichever wins will get the SSD.

The 2400 is the stronger chip, but I'm sure I read somewhere (perhaps even here) that base GHz is what really counts for the purposes of a modded MC server, which makes the 650 a better choice.

For what it's worth, on the single core benchmark here, the 2400 wins.

So! Which do I choose? 1.7.10 world, 140mods (ish). Probably only two players. Three is possible, but I'd be surprised.

Many thanks!

Yes your somewhat correct about the Ghz but it's not the only factor in determining CPU single threaded performance. You want a CPU that goes at least 3.0Ghz and both of them exceeds that and according to Passmark these are the outcomes
i 5 650 and i5 2400 have the following ratings
1319, 1718
So yes the i5 2400 would be the CPU of choice even though it's slower.
