Server / Client Mismatch problem

I just started a FTB server with Tech World 2 and added a couple of other mods, but when my friend tries to join he has such bad lag that he can break and get blocks but he can't see himself doing it, not to mention sometimes he logs in underground and has to relog to fix it.

Is there a solution to this or is it just a matter of reducing lag?

Any help would be much appreciated :)
