Hey guys 'n' gals.

So, I came across an Intel SR2500 for pretty cheap (about €300) and was wondering, how well would it actually hold up playing FTB? namely monster, and ofc future packs.

Server specs are:
Intel sr2500 2RU 19inch rack mounted server

CPU Socket LGA771

Dual Xeon E5410

Xeon E5410 2.33ghz

32gb kingston FB ddr2 ECC ram

6, 5,25inch hard drive bays

DvD RW Ultraspeed DvD ROM

And yes, this is for running the client on :p Just, not sure over lack of Graphics Card etc. But hell, if it works for that price, hells yes!

Cheers,

Snipe.

im also not sure about ddr2 memory , yes you have 32gb of ram but doesnt ddr2 have max frequency of 500mhz? thats pretty low...
but dont wait for others opinions go and test it.!

I was looking for info before I got it, because I don't really have 300 quid to be splashing out on a server for it not to work (Money is tight and need a new computer, hence why I had this idea! :p)[DOUBLEPOST=1396814167][/DOUBLEPOST]Also, the RAM is 667Mhz

this part:
2RU 19inch rack mounted server
Means you wont have room to put in a gaming graphics card

Also, since the description doesnt say what size HDD it comes with, you will need to buy one of those too

I also looked up the CPU on intel's site:
http://ark.intel.com/products/33080/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5410-12M-Cache-2_33-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB
its "end of life" since 2010 (4 years ago)

Now as a box to HOST minecraft servers it will probably do 'ok'. but modern desktops will do better.

my suggestion: Save your $300 and get something else

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. As I said, if it was gonna work, then I was gonna pick it up but if not then I was gonna save it for the desktop. Which is what I'm gonna do instead.

Thanks for the reply! :D

for current packs, with a gpu it should be fine. xeons crunch numbers very well.

the rig i'm posting on plays monster and RR, it is an intel e5200 (built on the same architecture as the xeon in that rig, iirc), 4gb ddr2, nvidia 550ti gpu. i built the machine in 2006-7 and it still runs like a champ. for future packs, we'll see how it fares. I don't see the massive 1.7 lag that some people speak of, yet.

end of life does not mean throw it away, necessarily. remember this is minecraft, not battlefield 4 maxed out.
