How are you sending the items to the router? Using BC pipes or RP2 tubes? I have a really simple temporary storage room with a bunch of barrels, a router and a relay with tube going to the router. I just chuck my stuff in the relay and then that sends it to the router, and if it's too fast it comes back up the tubes and cycles around until it's all gone. Tubes are great that way, no spillage.

useing BC pipes quite messy but it works but i might try the RP route but unsure how RP tubes would cope with my setup will have to do some testing

You can isolate the router feed with a RP2 relay. It will automatically dump everything into a pneumatic tube line from pipes or even directly into a machine. As an added bonus, it has a 9 slot buffer if the tube system is overloaded.
