Does everybody get random crashes while playing with lots of mods or is it just me? I play with the DW20 mods plus a few others. Game seems to crash entirely randomly while playing, maybe every half hour or so on average. I'm using 1.5.2

A lot of times the crashes say "Java Platform SE binary has stopped working"

The one which just happened a second ago was because I had alt-tabbed out, and it was in a smaller window. I clicked to maximize and it froze and crashed.
This doesn't seem likely mod related.

The most irritating thing about the frequent crashes is that the game itself takes several minutes to start up, so I feel like I spend more time loading the game than playing the game.

You probably ran out of memory/resources or something. Happens to me all the time in my custom modpack.
How many mods do you have?

About 105 I think. Running the DW20 1.5 pack plus a few extras.
I asked if extra memory would help here but the consensus is that it won't.

I've had random crashes in minecraft in older versions too. I was hoping that in 1.5 they might have fixed some of these issues. I was just wondering if may this was simply part of the game.

Well that log would point to sound crashing the game. You could try updating the lwjgl files: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Tutorials/Update_LWJGL (still applies for 1.5, it's only outdated for the new launcher of 1.6)

And if tabbing out crashes I must ask if you are running the game full screen? If you are, don't, because that is buggy and the solution is to simply run the game windowed but maximised if you want to fill the entire screen.

Additional memory only helps if you are crashing with "out of memory" errors but that doesn't seem to be the case so memory is not your problem.

hmm, I don't know about the LWJGL library update... as in, I just now heard of it in my other (16GB) thread in this same forum. Someone suggested updating the libraries. So I did. Then someone else said to NOT do this because it makes more bugs than it fixes. So I removed it. Not sure who's right.

Did you leave the updated LWJGL around for awhile? If you removed it straight away then how would you know if it was helping or not.

I only removed it because someone said to not use the update. I just put it back in and am testing to see if it fixes the crashing.

I know but someone else said put it in. Its hard to know whose advice to take sometimes and you just have to test it.

You might have to use a version that isn't the absolute latest but it will help. I couldn't get the game to even run with some versions. Different setups will affect this, though, as I am running Linux with open source java etc.
