Im actually about to start a contest server where people can win real money. The only issue with this is X-Ray. This would be a killer. Now I have noticed on the console, that it shows the mods players are using. Will an xray mod pop up on the console as a mod a player has installed?

if they are dumb they'll use a mod if they are smart they'll use a texture pack also afaik the console will only show forge and fml mods

also watch out for smart moving a good part of it will work without being installed on the server which can give players movespeed hacks and ability to climb places they couldn't normally w/o a jet pack

Yea, there's plenty of client-side mods that could have a significant impact on a competition server, and you've got almost no way to bypass it.

Heck, REI's Minimap could give a very unfair advantage, particularly if they bypass the restrictions on things like player/mob locations on the minimap.

There's several client-side mods that do things like allow creative-mode flight, speedhacks, teleporting/warping, xray...

I think Vechs had a solution for xray mods/texture packs... it was something like having a layer of TNT in certain areas so all you see is a massive wall of TNT rather than what is inside. He also made a lot of use of Bedrock, which xray mods tend to not squelch as much

All of these "solutions" only counteract several well-known publicly distributed mods. Keep in mind that no matter what you do, the Minecraft server will always send every player complete information about every block in all chunks around that player. Anybody with basic programming skills could write their own addon which would filter this data and spit out, for example, locations of all chests in range. And if money is at stake, trust me, there will always be somebody willing to spend an afternoon to get this information. The Minecraft client/server protocol wasn't written with security in mind, and it would take rewriting huge parts of the code, if it's even possible at all, to stop any non-trivial attempts at getting information you aren't supposed to have.

Yea, the only way to guarantee 'clean' installs is to set up your own LAN where all the machines are pre-installed with vanilla minecraft and you keep anyone from bringing in outside data sources and block access from the LAN to the internet as a whole (i.e. have everyone plugged into a router which physically doesn't connect to the internet).
