Howady,
Actually, am thinking of this post since a pretty long period to investigate some issues with Minecraft Servers Providers!!
Once, I have read some reviews about those who claim that Gaming has became something beyond description. Still, am totally OK with that, but many has some objections concerning that.
A lot of people claim that the ammount to be paid is a little bit exhausting for the family's budget.
So that, many DO wish to have a public server; may be with a limit of tries, but with all the Mods & Texture packs, which seem a hard target to be maintained !!

I've almost always have run a server out of my home. I did at one point try redstonehost.com. Even though I had root access I couldn't get the HD/RAMDISK repartitioned the way I wanted. They were using rsync instead of raid 1 with the RAMDISK. So I canceled the account within the 48 hour trial and went back to running my server on a dedicated ubuntu server (Intel i7, SSD, HDD, 8GB RAM). I do have some friends on the server and it is running the mindcrack pack + mystcraft.

Any availabilities?

I'm afraid this thread is just going to turn into a magnet for people who don't have a server and want someone to run it for them.

Well servers don't run on air you know! I'm paying 16 bucks a month for 2GB that may be just $8 per month per GB, it's adds up as months goes on. That's their "dirty scenes" of the servers industry. They make money on draining people wallets slowly but surely, rather than providing a one time pay payment.. I would estimate they at least making double what's your paying. I hate having to pay repeatedly for things cause industries really make good $$ from doing that. Sell rentals to other then get "infinite" cheap dollars. All they gotta do is keep it running which is not free but not nearly as much your really paying for.

While I don't know the numbers, the people that run the hosting services at very least must pay for their internet connection, the electric used, and also their staff. Not to mention recover the investment in the server/network hardware. Now how much of that $16 a month is profit and how much keeps the lights on I don't have a clue.

My main reason for setting up my own server was so that I control the way the server is setup from hardware up. The only way I can get that with a hosting company is a dedicated server (no virtual servers on a host). That can be very expensive. Plus I have learned a lot about Linux. I've played with centos, mineos, and ubuntu. My current server is ubuntu.
