Here's a problem I've encountered. I've had success port forwarding and running a server. However, I ran into ram issues and need to start the server using a batch file to increase the amount of ram allowed to the server. It seems now that the port stays closed instead of opening when I run the server. I've worked for 4 hours searching all over online for different solutions and I am so frustrated that I am ready to give up and quit. The port forward information has never changed and I feel like the cause of the problem is either because the server (which is a .jar file) has permissions to open the port while the .bat file does not. My router seems to keep ports closed unless they are being requested to open by use of a program on the forward list. If anybody has any experience with this I would be in your debt SO much.

  • Do you have an IP address set in the server.properties, if so, have you set this to your local IP or public IP. (Don't post the IP)
  • Make sure you have closed any Java processes and rebooted your PC/Modem/Router and try this again.
  • Is there a way to make your router keep the port open all of the time, as it may not be opening the port straight away as the server requests this?
Despite me running a server, I'm no expert on port mapping/forwarding, so on and so forth. But I will try and help you to the best of my ability.

I do not have a specific IP set in the server properties so that should not be the issue. I've also restarted everything a couple times. I wish I could find a way to keep the port open no matter what but I'm not sure how to do that. Would there be another port that would always be open that I could use for the server or is that not feasible? I feel like there should be a better solution than that.

I'm not sure to be fair, I was just suggesting keeping the port open presuming there would be an option to burried inside the menus. There's not a lot that springs to mind that could be the cause of the problem at the moment, I'll reply here if I do think of something that may be the cause of the problem!
