I've been doing some thinking about modded adventure maps. It wouldn't be too difficult to have a pack designed for them- it'd probably include the basics (RedPower, BC, IC2, Railcraft, etc...) as well as the few mods designed for adventure maps (thinking of that adventure map peripheral for ComputerCraft), but I don't think that'll be sufficient.
I propose this system: each map will have its own set of mods that are installed based on a description file in the map package, which can be hosted on whatever server is hosting the packs as they are, or can be imported directly through the launcher. That way, the map-maker can have precise control over what is in his map environment.
Of course, that implies major changes to the way the FTB Launcher stores packs. Instead of the pack just being an archive containing the mods, coremods, and config directories and some other data for MultiMC, it ought to be possible to define the mods in a pack by references to each mod, which the launcher would download once, the first time they are needed, and then automatically install for every pack/map that requests them afterwards.
These ideas have probably been thought of before, and reasons for not implementing them presented, but I couldn't find them, so I went ahead and posted my thoughts anyway. In either case, an adventure map pack is probably a good idea, and we should have a discussion on what-all should be in it. Any comments?
