So me and two friends decided to get away from a subscription paid server and decided to pool together and just build our own

To start for 3 players we figured
AMD A10 Quad core, no hyper thread, so 4 solid cores
8GB memory

would fit the bill...
I'm noticing even over the LAN direct connect some lag even single player.
So watching the server i do get alot of "Warning" cant keep up errors
and watching the TPS i see it go above 50 which produces the warning...

I've loaded FTB mod pack, and Ars magica

I've turned down view distance on server.properties to 6, from 10
I've attempted to load the entire server to RAMDISK to test to see if an SSD would fix the lag.
Soon as the server boots up i get error about a world leak. but cant determine which world it is.

Anyone have some advise on fine tuning the server.
right now i can say without a doubt it's the TPS
when running the server has 96% free memory

startup line i'm using is.
java -Xms1G -Xmx5G -jar ftbserver.jar

the single CPU minecraft is using is spiking to 70% ish, i've read somewhere about multi threading the worlds, but havnt attempted this yet as i'm not sure how to go about it. The more i read the more inaccurate information is out there.

So i figured i'd come here and start at the source.
Any advise would be helpful.

Lyghting,

Yep I was there too and had no end of issues. First don't try to run it in a RAM drive because its kinda unstable for this purpose. I tried that as well and got a ton of errors. The world leaking issue is a known issue that has to do with the mod Mystcraft. Just remember this, loading and unloading worlds like say traveling back and forth from the nether can really sack a servers memory fast. So try to minimize your travel between worlds, and especially the worlds created using Mystcraft or Twilight forest. Get all your ducks in a row and know the business you want to conduct while you are there so you can minimize travel. Use ender chests and bags with a simple sorting system in your home world so that you do not need to go back to "drop off supplies and items gained".

Ok here is a pastebin of my start.bat file for the server http://pastebin.com/ndaX69cX Use that in your start.bat file instead and I promise you will not be sorry. You will notice instant stability and tons of issues go away. The leaking worlds is again a known issue they are working on but this does not fix it and it should not be a real problem for you anyhow. I run mine on an AMD Phenom II Black 3.40 HGz Quad Core and 8G of RAM and have no issues so I think you will be ok. Also when you are traveling between worlds be sure to let others know you are going to shift worlds. When you do no matter what your going to spike the CPU and cause a hair of lag to the entire server.

Another thing I have noticed on my server is that flying can cause some movement errors and you will see them in the log for that player. In game I am Beannie and you will get an error like Warning Player "Beannie" Moved the wrong way! Basically this is a server and client issue. First your server is set to allow a certain number of chunks to be seen at any given time, and the client is moving too fast for the server to get those chunks loaded and ready to be entered. For me the solution was to dis-allow flying except for your 3x3 area that you are allowed to have one chunk loader in. This allows you to fly for your home base and makes it easier to work on your base without ladders or building scaffolds. But I do not allow flying outside of your home base with the exception of visiting oters home bases. They also have a loder and you can fly in that space and not cause issues. All other travel needs to be done on foot as intended, with the exception of mods like Mystcraft linking books, trains and things of that nature.

Anyway I hope this all helps. Drop me a line and let me know and if there is further need of help I will be happy to try and help you along. I remember being brand new to the server game and it was not an easy climb. Steep learning curve lol.

Sincerely,

TGB

Loaded your .bat, and seems to be more stable your right by far![DOUBLEPOST=1367191819][/DOUBLEPOST]Now i have to contact ISP apparently Centurylink only offers 869k upload speed?

my two friends have now gone home, they flew in to build the server.
Now they are having latency which we kind of expected. So i'll be contacting centurylink tomorrow to see if this is max or i'll be switching providers

Most providers are maxed at close too or around 1 mbit upload. You will notice a lag here and there when it comes to prime connection hours. Especially when all the little kiddies get home and start getting on the inet for homework or to game themselves. I am in a pretty rural area in Central Illinois and I only have 5 down .89 up and I host 8 people at a time with little issues. Also remember to do faithful backups on a daily basis and above all else run the /save-all command and then restart your server. At least 1 time every 24 hours. I do twice daily myself. 4am and 4pm. Again if you need any help or you wanna get onto my server and chat it up a lil let me know via a private message and I will get you the info. Glad I was able to help you :)

Yea, well my buds just logged in to test and sometimes they have to break bricks two or three times before it's actually registered. now with the new startup, i'm getting very few warning cant keep up, averaging 40-48MS TPS, We are destroying this world waiting for 1.5 to drop for feed-the-beast. which may drop tomorrow.
Central Ill. huh... Bloomington/Normal?

Sending PM for server info.

I would not do that... keep in mind a lot of the mods are not updating for 1.5 They are waiting for version 1.6 to release full. I would wait on 1.4.7 and go from there.. After you get on mine nad see how it works you'll see the diff. Not to mention we can gab it up at that time and really help to get you stable. Just takes a lil time and a ton of patience lol.
