Need Help, New to Mods

So I just got into mod packs and trying out mods. I first tried the Mindcrack mod. I got it to work fine. The only issue I'm continuing to get is that I can't use NEI. I'm not in multiplayer. I only play in single player. Is there something I have to download along with the Modpack to get NEI to work? Is there possibly something I'm doing wrong? It's not just the Mindcrack mod either, I downloaded Tech World and it's not working in that mod pack either. Everything seems to download fine and I don't have any crashes when it initializes. I'm extremely new to mods and I don't understand everything. I'm not even sure what a server is. I started watching a couple YouTubers play the Mindcrack mod and I wanted to try it out myself. They use NEI all the time and when I got into the game and tried it out, I could never get it to come up. The options button in the bottom left corner doesn't even come up when I open my inventory.

If anyone could help me that would be wonderful. I really want to be able to use NEI. It would make playing the Mindcrack and Tech World mods easier.
