Care to teach an old dog some new tricks? A few buddies and myself decided to rent some server space and start a MC server about a month ago. Wanting to keep things running in top form, I've been trying to educate myself in how best to manage this beast. We currently use Mindcrack and do not have Mystcraft loaded. We do have Twilight Forest enabled and are currently having 'leak' errors as discussed in another thread in this forum. However, I don't think that's a really big issue with what's going on with our server. With only 5 or 6 players online we are starting to have issues with CPU cycles and drops/disconnects, etc. With 8 online it's a struggle. So, a few questions for those of you more intelligent than I.
-which tick threading mod to install?
-I want to limit quarry size (~20x20) and number of operating quarries to one per person. Would limiting power to each quarry help also? For example, slowing the quarry down. Or, if I control the ticks in the area, would that suffice and I wouldn't have to place rules on quarry operation?
-I had everyone unload every chunkloader and quarry and when the server restarted we went from max usage to about 3-5% CPU usage. Would limiting the number of chunks open per person prove beneficial? A couple of the guys have rather large bases with many machines spread out over a large area. Would bringing all those machines into smaller space (maybe build up instead of out) be beneficial? The goal would be to limit # of chunks open. Or, would dumping a lot of stuff in a small chunk space drag down the CPU just the same (tick threading problems, etc).
-Preloading world...I've read about this and it makes sense to me. How does one go about accomplishing this? Also, if FTB Ultimate comes along and we want to move our world to that pack (which I have been told contains everything Mindcrack and then some), could we use WorldEdit to regenerate resources at that time?
-Chunkloaders vs world anchors. We currently use chunkloaders, but I am considering using world anchors as they operate only if the player is logged in. Is this correct? If so, is there a noticeable advantage of using the latter over the former?
I apologize for the length of the post. Feel free to PM me if you wish. I'm eager to learn as much as I can about this stuff.
Thanks!
