I've tried reading a tonne about mystcraft and I just can't figure out why I keep having this issue, I'm playing Infinity 1.7 and trying to make a nice flat age to quarry in, I'm not going crazy and generate a world make of diamond blocks or anything like that, just something pretty flat that will generate ores at the very least.

but every world I generate seems to know what it SHOULD be made out of, for example I made a mushroom world and there were shroomcows and mushrooms all over the place, but all of the actual ground was sandstone, all the way down, so I thought it was a bit wierd but whatever, try something else mystical forest biome, similar result, there were things that would indicate that it's a mystical forest, but it's all just sandstone...

Is there something I've missed here? I've tried filling the book with other things like weather modifiers etc to reduce the random stuff ( I could be wrong about how that works though) but that doesn't help, it seems like it always generates with either sandstone or endstone.

Edit: I was just reading a reddit thread where someone had the same problem and there was only one response where someone had said that the random generator had a really high weighting towards sandstone and endstone to prevent randomly creating OP worlds easily, I don't know if that's correct but if it is then why does it happen even when I specify biomes, materials and all that guff?

You need to specify which "solid block" and "fluid block" your world should be made out of when writing the age. If you don't the generator will pick some at random.

You do this by listing these before the terrain page.
Examples:
"Stone Block, Water Block, Flat World"
"Obsidian Block, Lava Block, Standard World"

Here is a helpful guide for how to use all the different pages:
