Multiple engines and a single lever

I have tried searching around and maybe I am not using the right keywords, but I have seen videos where people use redstone to send a signal to several engines at once with one lever. Thereby being able to start and stop said several engines at once. I cannot however figure out how to do this. I have put down the engines and the red stone and a lever but it no work. Using beta pack A v12. Can some one steer me in the right direction?
 
I use jacketed redstone wire under the engine. also before redpower got put in I would just place a row of dirt above the engines with redstone on it and flip a lever.
 
You probably didn't power the engines correctly with redstone. Here is great redstone mechanics reference:
