Modpack updates & config files

Hi, I'm thinking of trying out the new monster pack, but I will most likely want to edit the configs of some mods extensively (removing BoP from mystcraft symbols for example), if I update the pack in the future will I need to keep copies of my modified configs and reload them or does a mod pack update only update the mod files themselves.
