Modpack config files and update

I am trying to put a modpack together and am wondering...

When updating a mod that was previously installed, what happens to the config file of said mod?
If the config file changed, does it delete it and generate a new one? or does it add to the previous one therefore keeping any change you've made to the config?

I think it depends on the mod. I've seen mods do both things that you mentioned. Best way to make sure everything is still good is to backup the config files before you update and do a comparison after updating and starting the pack up again.

Individual mods it "should" keep the old config and add lines as needed, unless the modder is being a derp/dick.

Updating modPACKS via the launcher gets you a new set of configs which is REALLY annoying. Especially as they keep forgetting to turn the Simply Jetpacks sounds off.
