I'm experimenting with some ideas on a mod pack (adapted from my current Omega Dawn pack), that deals with resource shortages (aka ore gen really decreased among other tweaks). I quite often see comments about not needing a quarry after it's mined up 1 or 2 64x64 max areas, plus some of the default minecraft mechanics are turbo speed, especially in a modded environment.
I want to try and produce an environment where you need to be careful with your crafting, as wasting resources will be painful. Finding those dungeon chests with ingots will be a big boost for your progress instead of "meh, more iron...". Ore doubling (or more) and efficient builds then becomes vital.

So, At the moment I'm after the following three mods (if they exist, my google-fu is weak)

1) Finite water, but specifically, 2 types of water. Seawater and Fresh water. Fresh water is not infinite, Sea Water (determined by ocean biome type) is infinite, but sea water cannot be used as a water source for farms, boilers, etc, etc.

2) A mod to adjust minecraft variables, such as growing times of plants, animals, drop rates of saplings, etc, etc. I'm aware that HungerOverhaul can change many of these, but it also does a lot more.

Failing that, just a mod to adjust drop chance of Saplings. I want deforestation to be a vital part of the gameplay due to reduced drop rate and very slow growing time of trees. (key affect here is to make charcoal a difficult resource to aquire in vast quantities)

3) A mod that makes world gen solid stone more "tougher" to mine the deeper you go, so you can't just use a stone pickaxe straight down to bedrock.

A question, Does anyone know if FatherToasts MobProperties mod can control the armour/weapons added to skeletons/zombies by Mekanism? Really need to "nerf" that, especially on Hard Mode and Zombie Awareness.

Sadface, no replies yet. Oh well :p

A few more mods to the list:

4) A mod that changes the Nether Lava to a new "Super Hot" lava which can't be used as a fuel source, or picked up in buckets. Lava use then restricted to overworld source.

5) A mod that causes damage to players/mobs when they are near lava, to represent the scalding heat, fumes, etc.

6) A mod that offers item repairing like the AM2 Arcane Reconstructor, but more technological in nature, requiring a power source and raw materials.

Rotary craft has a item called the Grindstone, or something like that, that can repair tools to almost full durability. Not sure about armor though. And gregtech has a config for finite water I believe.

Hi Golrith; nothing to offer except support. I think I really like all your ideas. I'd personally also like to see blocks near bedrock level sometimes explode as a "gas pocket", using something like a fast-moving emasher gas ( a liquid that flows upwards, and can suffocate you if you don't have protection against that.)

On my servers in the past, I've required that things like Aqueous Accumulators (also the Engineer's Toolbox version) can only be used if they're placed into a large body of water, ie a sea, but not a pond or tiny lake.

Railcraft water towers were fine though, they are big, space-consuming, biome-dependent and don't work as fast :)

Thanks.

Always found that you don't actually need any sort of ore multiplication system with default ore generation. Since the pack includes Mekansim, which now offers a beast of a 5x ore processing system, this gives an opportunity to reduce ore gen by 4-5 times. Now you'll really hurt early game for resources, and need ore processing. Finding loot containing ingots will be a big reward instead of something you'd normally ignore.
Combined with many of the settings of HungerOverhaul and the other tweaks, makes for a more "slower" (or extended) gameplay. Then, using FatherToasts custom mobs mod to spice things up and give mobs more variety of drops and stats, and then also EnviroMine to get you keeping an eye on thirst, temperature, air quality and sanity, would make quite a more challenging survival game.

The extra mods I would like detailed in the first two posts would just be the cherry on the cake.

@Wagon153 Thanks for the suggestions. Not using IC2 (not keen on the mod now, and not that interested in GregTech). I'll check out RotaryCraft, being able to craft a machine to help maintain your equipment (armour and misc tools mainly) would be a big benefit in this pack environment.
