I have sewers feeding a composter, a fertilizer, a planter, and a harvester. The planter only needs seeds and carrots, so I want to keep that stocked with a stack of each, the fertilizer stocked with a stack of industrial fertilizer, and for everything else to go to an enderchest that goes to my sorting system. What combination of chests and pipes do I need to do this? And please, no "Just use AE!" answers. I'm trying to do this with Logistics Pipes.
 
Provider pipes on the output source and Supplier pipes on the input destination, check the filter settings and place the ghost items in, you can place any amount of items in the filter and the pipes will make sure the destination get that amount. You can also specify it to either have partial request or not. So it will either keep it topped up or supply only when it is dry.
 
Alternatively you can have passive supplier modules in chassis pipes on the planter and they work in a very similar way to the supplier pipe although they have a different Gui and they don't make pull requests. You can do it this way because all the MFR machines auto eject into pipes. So for the harvester and composter, all you need is a basic buildcraft pipe like cobblestone or gold. It should lead to a basic logistics pipe before it reaches the supplier section. Chassis mark one with the passive supplier should be fine on all planters that you have. Finally. consider having an item sink module in a chassis pipe on the fertiliser unless if you have a particular reason for only wanting 64 to wind up in the fertiliser. If you do want to be specific about the contents of the fertiliser have an onsite chest with the a mark 2 chassis with an item sink module for fertiliser and a provider module then slap a supplier pipe onto the fertiliser. However, in my experience the fertilisers use their stock pretty much as soon as they get it and outrun the production of fertiliser.

To finish it off you have two options to carry off all excess material to your sorting ender chest. The simplest is to use a basic logistics pipe and set it to default route. Alternatively, you could use a chassis pipe and explicitly define each item inside item sink modules to be directed to your ender chest. This means you can have an onsite default route which you may consider advantageous.

Finally, be aware that supplier pipes and passive supplier modules have a higher priority than item sinks and default routes. Therefore, your system will always strive to keep your planter stocked with x amount of seeds and it will only send the surplus back to your chest.
 
OK here's what I've got.

Harvester cutting down birch tree: Basic Logistics Pipe directly attached to Harvester output.
Planter planting birch tree: Supplier Logistics Pipe set to 64 Birch Saplings.
Enderchest: Basic Logistics Pipe set to request Birch Saplings and Birch Wood.
There's a T-junction with a Basic Logistics Pipe. Plenty of power. A few other branches to other places such as the Composter that provides fertilizer. All intersections have Basic Logistics Pipes.

Problem: Saplings are not going to the Planter, they all go to the enderchest. Do I need Supplier Pipes or Supplier Modules on the Harvester? I put a chest and a Provider Pipe in, and now the planter is being stocked but nothing's going to the enderchest.
 
Dump the supplier pipe entirely. Replace it with a Basic Logistics pipe, and set it to be the route for Birch Saplings, then set the ender chest as the default route for everything else. Use blockers such as wheat seeds if you feel the need to control the amount in the planter.
 
OK, now my problem is with the planter that's planting wheat, carrots, and potatoes. It keeps running out of seeds, all the seeds only go to the enderchest.

Harvester: chest with provider pipe, default settings
Planter: Provider pipe set to provide 64 seeds, 64 carrots, 64 potatoes
Enderchest: Provider pipe set to provide 1 seed, 1 carrot, 1 potato

Carrots and potatoes are going to the planter, but not seeds. I suppose I could go with the basic pipe and just hope that it never runs out of anything and stuffs something else in the slot.

So what should I set up the Enderchest as? Basic LP? Should I set what items it asks for and click Default? Will that make it lower priority than the other Basic LP on the Planter? Because if I don't specify any items, nothing goes to it.

I'm starting to lose my motivation to use LP. I really, really wanted to like this mod. I thought it would be much more fun and much more satisfying than AE. But it's just completely impossible to get the damn thing to do anything.
 
Do not set any specifics on the ender chest pipe. Making it the default route means that any items that do not have a place to go will head to that pipe.
 
You will probably be better off using a passive supplier module set to keep x amount of what you want in the planter. It does work and only surplus will end up in the ender chest. I have had success with it before.

With a Provider Pipe on the Harvester's chest, and a Basic Logistics Pipe on the Planter set to receive seeds and carrots and potatoes, and another on the Enderchest set to default, nothing moves anywhere.[DOUBLEPOST=1378763356][/DOUBLEPOST]

So that needs a Chassis Pipe? I haven't made any of those. I'll have a go at that tomorrow, thanks.
 
If you want to use a provider on the chest, you need a supplier on your receiving end.

And all these can be accomplished in an easier way without the need for LP really. Golden pipe output direct from Harvester, connecting with diamond pipe attached to Planter with filter set for inputting into the Planter, continue with the golden pipes into your Enderchest.

What will happen is that your Harvester will pipe everything it harvests out to the pipes, when they go pass the Planter's diamond pipe, anything that you have set as filter towards the Planter will go in until there's no more inventory space. The rest + the surplus will head towards the Enderchest. No need for LP.
 
Suppliers suck things out of inventories, and providers push it into them. You need Providers to mate with suppliers.

The pipe feeding the router is a set destination, so it'll go there first. If the item can't go there, it'll go to the next destination in the sequence which will be the default route, in this case, the Ender Chest. It really is a cool mod, but sometimes you'll find yourself over thinking it. Since the Harvester auto-ejects, and has no inventory of it's own, you have no need for the fancy provider/supplier pipes.

Unless something runs out for some reason. Eventually I want a supply chest that is kept stocked with a few hundred of each type, and the planter will be kept stocked from that, and it in turn will be kept stocked from the harvester. And, I want to over-think it!
 
The reason you're only getting seeds into the planter is because the provider pipe only supplies what the supplier requests of it. Everything else just sits and waits.

So use Basic Logistics pipes to send the seed items into a chest, and then a provider from there to a supplier feeding the planter.
 
OK I've ripped out all the Provider/Supplier pipes. This involved removing the diamond chest that was full of Industrial Fertilizer and sending it directly from the Composter to the Fertilizers as it is produced. I'm not happy that I've lost the big reserve. Now, the Fertilizers only get replenished as and when the Composter produces new IndFert, and if they happen to all be full then it will go into my AE enderchest, and I don't have a neat way to get it back again if stocks run low (my farm is a long way from my base). In order to stop one Fertilizer from just grabbing it all, I have blocked out most of the inventory slots with dirt, just leaving two slots in each. I suppose if my Composter can out-pace the rate at which I am using IndFert, then I can gradually free up the slots in the Fertilizers so that they eventually will fill up.
 
There is a good way, using LP. Use one system at your base with LP connected to an ME interface using a Request Pipe, and Inventory System Connector. Plug those into an ender chest at home, and then a provider pipe and another Inventory System Connector at your farm. Now you can connect those Fertilizers up to the fertilizer storage in your AE system.

That said, you probably didn't have to remove those providers and suppliers. Unless for some reason you were routing the seed stock through that chest.

Can you get some pictures? That'd probably make helping you a lot easier.
