I'm starting a server, and at spawn I have a ''communal home'' for starting players, as well as a rules board. ATM it's just made out of a bunch of vanilla signs cleverly minding word count. However, I'd like to do away with that and make a biiiig old sign that contains all the rules and such of the server. How can I go about this?

Depends on the server pack/mods you are running. If you have computer craft you can make a big display using the monitors. If you use the advanced version you can even add color to your text. You could even make it a touch screen so they can page through the rules and access them from a central menu.

The RFTools mod has some nifty signs; multiple sizes, customizeable, and even interactive if you like to embed buttons. I only know this because I was watching a DireWolf20 RFTools spotlight, but might be worth checking out.

I tried using computercraft and it's monitors but every time I'm off the server for more than 10 mins the program resets and I have to re write it. What are the large signs in RF Rools called?

The RFTools Screen module is resizeable, up to 3x3. However, you can place screens next to each other to make larger displays.

You may have to look into chunk loading if you're trying to keep a block running while you're offline - I'm not sure what you're aiming for design-wise.

For the server I usually play on, they've set up multiple screens for specific use areas (power generation, enchanting table, spawn market, etc), and provide a book to all new players containing the complete server guidelines, as well as tips for setting up things like towns using the MyTown mod.

Personally, I prefer smaller chunks of data related to what I'm trying to do, reading a massive wall of text like this post is becoming makes my eyes glaze over. :D

Also with computer craft, you need to use the label command to give the computer a name before it actually retains programs you create for it. Also, you want to make sure it is set to auto start the program when the computer is reset. That way it starts your program for the monitors automatically. Once these steps are done you don't need to chunk load it. But it might be a good idea to do so anyway.

Ok so how do I get the screens to display my data?

Screens (multiple or single) are controlled by one unit; the Screen Controller. This box can be hidden away somewhere with a power feed, it's connected wirelessly to the screens. It does take multiple kinds of modules, depending on what you'd like to show on the screens. I'd start with some Text Modules, but RFTools has a lot of options for showing data via these screens.

RFTools also has a good in-game guide, if you haven't taken a look at that yet I'd recommend making a copy.
