I am sure this question has been asked before, i apologize for asking again if this is the case.
My friends and I have a Mindcrack FTB server, and over the last 4-5 months or so, it has become more of just a building server. We all want to be able to update to minecraft 1.6 and the future updates, but obviously that is not possible with redpower not being updated anymore. So my question is if there is anyway we can update the server without losing all the things we built?

The easy answer is no.

From what I've experienced it would take so much work and effort plus constant problems and bugs that you would be better off just starting over or staying in the version you currently plat with

It's a bit more then just Redpower man it's more the fact that most of the mods have had large changes since 1.4.
It's a fact of Minecraft; new versions of Minecraft will always mess up maps sometimes to a point where a restart is pretty much necessary. It's not always the case with little updates but significant updates almost always mess up maps. And I'm talking about vanilla here but applies even more to mods.

TBH if you don't mind large deformed terrain and huge holes you can just hamfistedly just remove RedPower with minimal trouble. But even then your map still might not be compatible with 1.5 and onwards.

No, more than ever, new version requires new world. Especially since the big problem you face in losing RP2 is the Marble which will be forming large chunks of your world, as well as the complete disappearance of any building constructed of microblocks. And frame contraptions. And the disappearance of all RP2 Red Alloy Wire, and Logic Gates.

Combine that with ID conflicts from new vanilla blocks, and conflicts with mods that might be added or removed in the future and well... I'd say save the world for anyone who wants to play in an old version and reset it. Plus you get the fun of blowing up all that stuff. Nothing kicks off a map reset like a demo party.
