Been using a tank with 600k fuel to power 6 combustions hooked up to 2 quarries which are being designated 12 mj/t each, toggled on and off by a state cell for max efficiency. I have been running them for about 3 days straight now and there's 400k fuel left. Considering one small oil spring has 500k+ oil, isn't this a bit silly?

Yeah, that does sound silly. I haven't really done anything with oil, as I've got loads of biofuel. Good to know, though, that it is extremely energy dense. Maybe run some more engines so you can use 25mj/t on those quarries to speed them up a bit, eh? I've got my primary quarry at 50mj/t and it is faster than I can run.

12 mjt is as fast as I am willing to go because of the inefficiency of running a quarry at high speed.

Indeed, it is less efficient per block mined. But when you are making over 100mj/t with steam engines, and it just goes to waste otherwise, well, more speed is a good "waste" of your power.

I store excess in cells so it doesn't go to waste.

I've got an ender chest full of redstone energy cells, currently, in my redstone energy cell turtle-based mover system. And I'm using the double-sized ender chests, as well.

I'm putting in a few more sugarcane farms so I'll start running my two secondary quarries at 50mj/t. At least, after I upgrade my cobblestone/dirt recycling center.

Fuel isn't bugged. It's always been an incredible power source, and the reason I love using combustion engines.

The smallest oil springs contain around 300-400 buckets of oil. Remember that Railcraft tanks show mB, and 1,000 mB = 1 bucket.
Really large oil springs are exceptionally rare, but there have been records of some with geysirs over 30 blocks tall. These springs will hold over 10,000 buckets of oil.

A bucket of refined fuel will yield 600,000 MJ in a combustion engine; in other words, each bucket of fuel is worth an entire redstone energy cell.

Why is it so powerful? Because it's a limited, non-renewable resource. It's balanced against the fact that there are weaker fuels which you can generate out of thin air with no effort. Finding oil, however, requires effort, and it won't last forever, so it better be good.
