Inter-dimensional portals - portalgun/mystcraft?

I haven't been able to find any in-depth tutorial vids that answer my questions, but is it possible to make inter-dimensional portals with either PortalGun or Mystcraft crystal portals?

For example, quick travel to the End from our base. At the moment it either involves an 800 block trip overland or a 100 block trip via a very laggy nether. I did try left click with the portal gun in our overworld base and right click against a 2 high wood pillar in the End but it wouldn't work. Am I doing something wrong?

Also what's the deal with the mystcraft portals? Do these only link to the Mystcraft worlds or can you do them to link between overworld and the End (for example) too? I should add that I don't yet have the link modifier, although not sure if that's relevant for the crystal portals anyway?

I am using the standard Beta A v12 pack.

In my world, I have MystCraft portals that go to the End (for my Enderman Farm) as well as to the Nether (for lava transport). I even have mystcraft portals in the overworld that link to different places in the overworld, although I was having some issues with carts using them appropriately. All it takes is a linking book.

Right, I must be doing something wrong then. I have made a crystal portal in my overworld base, 3 high x 3 wide arch (2 empty blocks in middle to walk in). I was stood on block in front of it with my back to it and created a green linking book. I went to End, made another portal with receptacle and inserted aforementioned book into the slot and nothing happened. I thought that was supposed to ignite the portal allowing me to travel back to my overworld base? Obviously I would make a linking book in the End too to insert into my overworld portal. Am I missing something? :S

Not that I can see, it's exactly what I did. I did it on the FTB Beta Pack, not the MindCrack or Direwolf Pack. Dunno if that makes any difference or not.

try putting the receptacle on a different block on the portal?

OK I've tried different sides for the receptacle and tried a 3 high arch portal too, nothing makes any difference. I should mention that using the books directly (clicking the black square) works fine.

Any ideas why they're not lighting up when I'm putting the book in? Must be something simple?

Not doing anything. That is my green overworld linking book inserted in it.

There's no bottom. The portal has to be magic crystal blocks all the way around, like a nether portal.

You also need crystal blocks on the bottom, like you also need with a Nether Portal with Obsidian.

To the best of my knowledge, you need to enclose it all the way around, bottom included.

So that's mystcraft sorted out, now what about portalgun? Do these only work together in the same dimension? I got them working good together in the overworld, but trying to do one in overworld and one in nether or End doesn't seem to work.

Sorry, can't help with that. I've never used a portal gun.

Portal gun can not be used across multiple dimensions.

Because the portal gun actually remembers the portal placement in that dimension, ie even if you use your portal gun in the nether wen you come back to the overworld it will remember the portals you placed there
