Inserting into the Carpenter

I just had something odd happen. I moved my carpenter from one spot to another in my base and I can't set it up the way I had it.

Before, I had an AE export bus inserting wood logs into the carpenter to automatically craft impregnated sticks. It was working flawlessly before but now, no matter which side of the carpenter I insert into, all the logs go into the useless TOP slot of the carpenter. What is that slot for anyway? It seems entirely unnecessary. Most importantly, why can't I insert into the carpenter's main inventory anymore?

try putting something that wont be used there first, like a bucket or something

Set a recipe first. If you don't set a recipe the logs will go into the top slot for some reason.

That's messed up. Never liked the Forestry machines' UI.

Yeah, they're a bit outdated compared to some of the newest machines. I really like how the MFR bioreactor works; it makes it very simple to insert different stuff because it only accept one stack of each unique item. More machines should work like that.
