Smelting a single nugget of iron in a vanilla furnace gives you get one wrought iron, however, place that wrought iron nugget back into the furnace it gives you a further nine iron nuggets!
As you see, you can set yourself up with a system that gives you an increasing number of nuggets and then of course ingots.
This also works for some other nuggets but not all.
