I have never messed with Thuanmcraft. Found an Aura node and punched it to death and received a bunch of essence drops.....what happens now and what exactly did I do?

So basically nothing past what you said - the node is gone! Breaking small/weak aura nodes is a legit way of getting the essence drops if you don’t want to jar them. In particular the auram ones
