Hello,
I did some searching, but couldn't find much information. The problem I'm having is, when I try to run FTB Infinity I am getting some harsh lag. By that I mean - block lag (while breaking blocks, blocks will reappear), lag while mining blocks (fps drop while actually breaking with a pickaxe), crafting lag (lag while crafting items in the vanilla crafting table), & lag while turning lava to obsidian by pouring water over it (these are just what I've noticed in the short amount of time I've played on this world/this pack)...I don't get a whole lot of lag from generating chunks and the such (nothing more than is to be expected). I don't have ANY machines built and running yet (unless you want to include two vanilla furnaces). I'm running the latest mod pack version, I have optifine installed and fastcraft is enabled (other than installing optifine, no other modifications to the pack has been made). Here are my specs:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
CPU: Intel Core i7-4700 (2.4 GHz)
Installed RAM (physical): 16 GB (I've allocated 13GB to minecraft through the FTB launcher)
Virtual Memory: 32 GB
Computer: Asus G750JX
Java Version: 8 Update 31 (latest is 45, am updating now to see if anything changes. according to the FTB launcher, my java version is 1.7.0_72)

ANYWAY, back to the original question:

Is it possible to host a server on my second hard drive and run minecraft on the other and connect to the server? Do you think this will rectify any of the aforementioned lag issues? Will I see any positive or negative effects from doing this?

If you need any other information, please let me know. Any other help with diagnosing my lag issues is greatly appreciated.

Are you currently running other processes on your computer? Running a server+client on the same system is going only make it lag more (even though you offloading some of the IOPS).

No, not other processes are running. I updated java, disabled journeymap, and reduced the amount of allocated ram to 4 GB...going to give that a shot. Any other suggestions?

Yes that should helps because the system will have to spend less time loading memory. If it doesn't then your bottling necking at the CPU and the only way to deal with that is to run on a leaner mod pack or try to play on a separate server may helps (because the client will have to process less things). If your looking towards trying the separate server solution then I would try first a public one and see it helps, then you can look at renting one yourself if you don't want to play on those (RAM requirements on a server just for yourself/a few people won't be very high).

If you do find a server may do you well you can check out my thread for "carpooling" my dedicated server here http://forum.feed-the-beast.com/thr...thout-the-premium-price-tag-you-got-it.90225/.

I hope these points help you out.

Man I wish they would just add a description in the launcher to a site or something, explaining what it actually means to allocate RAM :p

You can probably reduce it down even further. More RAM is not better! A process can only use the same amount of RAM as the size of the process. RAM is not some magical "GO-FASTER" button. With JAVA the less RAM you give it the better actually.
You can get a picture of how much RAM your game is actually looking by hitting F3 ingame and looking in the upper right corner. Set it to something with a decent margin above that.

I would suspect that your Achilles heel is probably your CPU. Minecraft cannot really utilize multicore processors properly, so a mobile 2.4GHz is not really ideal for playing a large 1.7 pack.
Setting up a server locally should not be done for your Harddrives sake. If you do it it should be put on your fastest HD(the SSD). It should be done purely to spread out the processes to better take advantage of the multicore CPU. I have tried it with a quite extended and complex world and gained a little bit of performance. But if you are already reporting this much performance issues with a newly generated world, then I doubt you will gain anything to speak of from it. Instead I would suggest you consider a smaller pack or going back in version number as those packs are considerably easier to run.

Entirely agrees, many providers screw you over this fact but often times it's the CPU that is a priority than RAM is.
As well as pretty much every mainstream computer dealers adds :p
OS, Harddrive capacity and total RAM installed. That is apparently the 3 most important things to know about a PC LOL!!! :D
