Hi all, I am very very new to minecraft and am addicted like crazy :) Anyways, my question is, and i hope I am not violating any of the rules here, but I am also very new to mod packs and do have technic launcher and was wondering how FTB is? Can anyone who has played both FTB and Tekkit Lite tell me what the main difference is and which of the two is more of a grind so to speak. I love building thing but can't stand nor have the patience when things become so technical that it will take me days to build lol. Please let me know which is more fun. Thanks all :) Oh one last question which is easier to get startd in multiplay if I wanted to?

I played Technic before FTB came out, and mainly, FTB has may more mods than Tekkit, and also, FTB also has all of the modder's permissions, which is something that Tekkit doesn't do.

Both Technic and FTB are just launcher platforms. They differ in the way they look.

What you want to know about are modpacks. And both Technic and FTB offer a large number of modpacks, most of which are not even designed by the Technic/FTB temas themselves.

Unfortunately I haven't played Tekkit Lite, but by looking at the mod list you should be able to compare the pack easily to the FTB offerings. I can tell you that both the Magic World and the Direwolf20 packs on the FTB launcher should be suitable for you, if you don't like progression gameplay. On the other hand, stay away from the Ultimate and Mindcrack packs.

Thank you so much for your reply. May I ask which you find is more a grind as far as making items? I heard from reading the web that FTB is more of a grind. Thanks...

We're playing 1.4.7 or 1.5.1 nowadays, ryter78. What was back in 1.2.5 has nothing to do with that anymore.

"Progression gameplay" meaning the thing you said you don't like: having a long path of continuous upgrades to play through. A "tech tree", if you will. You progress from one stage to the next, and the ultimate projects take a significant investment in time and resources. The Ultimate and Mindcrack packs contain a mod which specifically changes other mods to make them more progression-centric. This is what people may have meant when they said "FTB is harder": if you play these two packs, you need to invest more time.

On the other hand, the Direwolf20 pack (a well-known youtuber's personal choice selection of mods) or the Magic World pack (a themed modpack with mods focusing largely on mystical things, magic and unrealistic mechanics) do not have that; it is more of a flat setup where each mod can be played on its own without progressing with other mods first.

Well the Mindcrack and Ultimate packs have a mod called Gregtech in them. For many new players Gregtech can make the game really difficult, and in my opinion a bit of a grind fest. Now Tekkit Lite doesn't include Gregtech.

An important thing to note though is that Tekkit Lite is just a single mudpack, FTB refers to multiple modpacks.

I would recommend looking at the descriptions of each mudpack and decide which you think is enjoyable for you, since everyone has a different play style for Minecraft and no one will ever agree on a favourite mudpack (Mine for instance is the DW20 pack, but this in no way means it is the best).

Edit: Ninja'd :p

Thank you so much, you are very knowledgeable.I don't mind so much the tech tree type progression gameplay, I just hate when it takes real life days to build lol. I also hate mining because, and maybe because I am new but I have a hard time finding the stuff I need. :)

I'm afraid no matter which mudpack you pick you will have to do lots of digging. Fortunately all of them have ways to automate the process to varying degrees.

Both Ultimate and Mindcrack packs have this progression gameplay that was mentioned, but i think its far more extreme than your thinking about.

In the "light" packs like direfolf and magic you can do each individual "task" in a couple hours, like get 11 diamonds tobuild a quarry should be accomplished in a few hours.

on the other side the "hard" packs change the recipes so theyr VERY resource intensive.

Basically if you like to build cool stuff, be rich and build with creativity DW or magic is the chouice for you. If you would like to work for RL weeks to achieve the endgame content (like impressive reactors and such) then mindcrack or ultimate are for you.

If you are undecided i would suggest to play direwolf first, and if you feel its too easy then switch to ultimate or mindcrack (switching is also rather easy as all FTB packs are compatible, youll just need to find new terrain to fin the new world generation if you upgrade.).

Hope it helps!

I played Tekkit for three months before I heard about Feed the Beast. Tekkit has mods that are very overpowered, no modders permission, and is never updated. Feed the Beast requires a lot more work, all mods have permission from the author, and is quite up to date. Feed the Beast is also very simple to add mods in. But FTB crashes... A LOT.

If you don't like progression, please do stay away from bees.

It is the part of the game that requires the most time and effort. Not so much resources, but so much species to go through, one after an other, that it might not be worth the rewards if you don't enjoy the trip.

Great, I am going to try Direwolf first, but I see you mentioned about switching. Just out of curiousity how does one do that? Say I made a world in direwolf. Can I switch that same world or the the things I build to say Mindcrack or ultimate? How does this work. Thanks...

Satanic I believe the whole no permissions fiasco was solved ages ago, Technic/tekkit has permissions from everyone last time i checked, but on the other hand as it is nice to have the modders permissions, it is not illegal to not have permission, and FTB is a great mod all together but the crashes are due to relatively new patches and new mods, tekkit and other mod packs in the technic pack are still waiting to update tekkie/technic, but tekkie Lite, is there to show their progress, I really don’t see the need for the whole technic vs. FTB other than both teams egos

Direwolf can be ported to Ultimate, however, you must remove every compact solar from your world.

As far as I understand it, it should convert them to advanced solars, as they use the same IDs.

Never tried though, so don't quote me on that.

Oh really? I stopped paying attention to the permission catastrophe when I stopped playing Tekkit.

That is my understanding as well. The DW20 to Ultimate is painless except for the GT ores and such needing new terrain generation.

Download the ultimate pack. You can then just copy your world under saves from the Direwolf20 folder to the Ultimate folder. So something like this
C\:FTB\Minecraft\Direwolf20\saves\MyWorld
copied to
C:\FTB\Minecraft\Ultimate\saves\Myworld

//going off memory only so may not be 100% right on folder names
