Windows .exe Help with why I am lagging.

I have a great 4-core processor, no saved minecraft/FTB worlds, and a really good graphics card. Though, whenever I visit my friend's world on lan I lag like crazy even when my render distance is on small and all the menu options are set to have max FPS. Any help on what is causing this and how I can prevent the lag?
