Help with FTB Insanity

I got 1 redstone. It wont allow me to put it in the transmutation table. What am I supposed to do with it? Also my pickaxe broke the chest for the 1 challenge and its machine. I tried putting it back together. Will this mess up my game?
 
First question: Transmutation table has two modes of operation, energy and matter. You can't straightforward convert using it energy to matter and matter to energy. Redstone is energy. To switch modes of function empty the table from all EMC and then put redstone in it to learn it (to make more redstone you need energy, for example charcoal). To convert matter to energy and vice versa you can use either energy condenser or klein star, both are a bit later game. More info on ee2: http://equivalentexchange.wikispaces.com/
