Hi, I've started using Universal Electricity and am wondering if I'm doing something wrong.

First of all, the wires sometimes completely break (disconnect from each other and machines until I replace them)
Secondly, just using basic components there seems to be something completely unbalanced.

Using a stack of coal into a coal generator (which is also too much for the basic batbox, which is problematic considering that putting small coal amounts in the generator is quite the waste), yields me enough power to smelt 4-5 stacks of Items. But using that full stack of coal I could easily use a vanilla furnace to smelt 8 stacks of stuff.

Is that wanted? Because it comes with a big upfront cost and isn't just weak (which i would be fine with) but just useless.

The coal generator and furnace are some of the basic components. They really just exist so that there is something that exists at all. You have to keep in mind, Universal Electricity is an API, not a mod per se. It is meant to be something used to make other mods. As such, you can regard these items as more of a proof of concept than something you actually want to use.

Check Direwolf20's youtube channel for mod spotlights on Universal Electricity mods. There's quite a few others which add more useful components. Basically, build solar panels and thermal generators. They require zero fuel and have more output than most generators that do require fuel, and are pretty cheap to make. There's absolutely no reason to build anything else for power generation, ever.

...well, maybe with the exception of the fission and fusion reactors, because those are just these huge, awesome looking multiblock monsters.

To be honest it would be nice if the basic components wouldn't work at a loss, but i guess its a thing that I'll have to live with.

But the fact that all of the other generators also behave "weird" as in fueled gens being worse than non-fueled, makes me kinda sad.

Also anything on the cables disconnecting?
