hi there,
believe it or not i run a small ftb server in my house for 5 people 3 are one my local network and 2 connect online and its only a laptop
its an hp pavillion dv2116wm
amd turion 2 core tl-52 1.6Ghz
8 gig ddr2 800
60 gig ssd
also i run mineos as the os btw that is the 64 bit version
and running tech2 modpack
it does lag sometimes (like when harvester chop down big fields largest size) but is isnt a deal breaker .
i'm looking to build a new server and the one im working on is an embedded motherboard system (for the power savings) a celeron j1900 or j2900 they are quad core 2-2.4 Ghz with about 16 gigs of ram with the same ssd for swap file and a 7200 harddrive (small one just for backups and saves) still useing mineos as the os and using part of the 16 gig (like 4 gig) as a ramdrive. i figure that would be enough to run the direwolf 1.7 pack just fine.
i have looked alot online about hardware setups for FTB and they go all over the place or way too much $$$ on the parts....i have tried testing myself with running a server on this laptop witch ia and amd a10 2.5 quad core with 8 gigs of ddr3 and windows 8 watching my task manager looking at the resources it uses and adding clients and letting them play while i watch the server and i found out alot...
first of all cpu cycles didnt change much the only time they when above 10% was when lot of entities happened ( like havesting and fast quarry mining) but that was only for a split sec then down to nothing. memory on the other hand was more related to chunks loaded and work being done (like mining and alot of stuff moving around) and how far everyone is spread apart.plus i found it easier to not over build at spawn (it helps with lag) so i figure the ram-drive would help with that and allocating 6 or 8 gigs to the game.
btw i also found out that minecraft and forge will use all the cores evenly and is multi-thread capable tech2 modpack uses all 4 cores evenly and useds 12 threads to run....now that if your os is 64 bit and also java is too ...
the price for that server i am building is 300 bucks i'll do a full write up on how it does.
